Could it Be?

Sara walked backstage after her performance. Before she went out, she was sure that this was going to be another dull and unfulfilling night. She remembered that strange feeling in the pit of her stomach before she left home to head to The Seductress, and now she understood there was more to her feeling.

She came out on stage and looked around the room as she always did. As she sang, she looked at the faces of everyone in the room. As always, there were a sea of stares and looks of people who were completely mesmerized.

After her mom died, she really didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. She had just inherited a beautiful home on a secluded island, but she didn't want to be secluded on this island. She wanted to live and love. Her mother had always told her that she had the voice of an angel. She remembered the newspaper article that she found, calling for auditions for singers. She remembered the first time she sang for anyone since her mother had died was at that audition.

There was the talent scout and the club manager who were there to listen to what seemed like an endless line of women before and after her. Sara was feeling helpless when it was finally her turn. The club manager was impatient and would barely let each person auditioning finish one line of a song before he curtly dismissed them.

As she got to the microphone, she gulped loudly. As she opened her mouth to say hello, she noticed the talent scout and club manager seemingly enthralled and mesmerized. Their previous expressions of impatience seemed to disappear as she opened her mouth. This gave Sara some much needed confidence before she sang her song.

She thought of her mom and picked a song that would show off her vocal range while feeling the words that she was singing. She chose "My Heart Will Go On," by Celine Dion. She felt her heart break off in half when her mom died. She felt completely alone and desolate. This song was as much for her mom as it was for herself.

She started to sing, "Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you. That is how I know you go on."

She paused for a split second to scan the room. By now, the club manager had usually interjected and dismissed the singer. As she looked up at the two men, their eyes were wide and mouths open.

She continued with the song, "Far across the distance and spaces between us, you have come to show you go on."

Sara thought she heard the talent scout say, "She sounds like an angel!" But she wasn't quite sure.

So she continued with the song, "Near, far, wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on."

Having been given the opportunity to sing three lines, she stopped abruptly and nervously. The room fell silent, and the men just continued staring at her as if they were in a daze. She looked back at the line of people waiting to audition, and they all looked just as stunned.

After a minute of quietness, Sara broke the silence and said, "Thank you for your time."

The talent scout quickly said, "My, my, I think I've found my destiny!"

Sara was shocked and couldn't believe she heard those words! The gruff club manager chimed in now, and she was sure she was going to be ripped to shreds by this awful man. "Sara, your new name is Destiny when you get on stage. You are remarkable, and you will be my resident star. I will not take no for an answer, so name it and it's yours, as long as you promise me you will be my star!"

Was he really serious? This was the first time she had met Gavin, the owner of The Seductress and club manager. Sara had been performing at The Seductress for 5 years now, and Gavin had given Sara everything she had ever asked for and more.

Ever since her first audition, she had that same effect on anyone who heard her sing. She didn't understand it, as this only started to happen once her mother died. She had grown tired of what seemed like putting people in to a hypnotic trance. She also was perplexed as to how everyone claimed she locked eyes with that person. To Sara, she always scanned the room and didn't lock eyes with anyone in particular. But oddly, after every performance, every single person in the room swore she was only staring at them.

Well tonight was different because she did lock eyes with someone. He was a man who seemed to be in his late 20s, and he was part of the trio of men that had turned up and excited all of the ladies that worked at the Seductress. Normally, she could care less, but this man did keep his eye contact with her. But there was something very different about this man. He didn't seem to be mesmerized or in a trance. He seemed to be in control, and her heart fluttered as she sang and continued staring in his eyes.

She didn't want to get her hopes up because she was yearning for a real connection and a fix to her heartache. Could this be...? She immediately dismissed the hope that he might be a key to mending her heart. She had been given everything these past five years, yet she still felt like she had nothing.

Zane was the only person in five years who seemed to maintain an even expression as she sang. It was almost like he didn't care or wasn't phased by her. While she felt uneasy that his expression remained unchanged, she also felt a sense of relief. As the curtains began to fall, she stared at him, an uncontrolled smile formed, and she involuntarily winked at him! She couldn't believe she actually felt the urge to engage THIS man! Her heart was racing, mostly because she was so curious to know if he had fallen to her seductress spell or was immune as she had hoped.
