Chapter 22

The night is ghostly on deck, the sub breaking the surface hours ago. The top-deck of this ship-hybrid is massive, having three levels.

I look up into the night sky and see two bright moons.

Full moons.

I close my eyes and shiver, remembering that the moon seductively warns you to be on guard and, at the same time, to be foolish. It's a delicious contradiction. I will never miss that warning again, though. I tug the blanket around my shoulders tighter as my eyes scan the men on the upper deck on which I stand.

The sea appears black, the choppy waves smash against the ship, rocking the massive rig. There is something eerily calming and terrifying about being out at sea in an alien world.

It's humbling.
