Chapter 12: Her Voice

Vi POV

*4:30 AM*

I took out my earphones attached to my phone and tapped on my screen. Music started playing loudly as I ignored the surroundings around me. I felt my legs wobbling a bit from walking. My phone suddenly buzzed. I took out my phone and answered the call, "Why weren't you here? Huh?"

"Vi!" I looked towards the source of the faint voice. I tried to recognize him but all I could see was his black silhouette under the bright lamp posts in this busy street. All of a sudden, a car took a sharp swerve and lost its control as it continued skidding faster. I tried to move away but I couldn't, my feet were plastered on the ground. I can't move even an inch.

The brute force from the car made my entire stumble on the concrete floor. With my vague vision, I glanced at my side and noticed a man's silhouette. He held and caressed my hand yet his eyes were filled with shock. The pain worsened as he gently lifted my head with his spare hand. Under his shuddering voice, he whispered, "Please, don't die yet. Please, I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose one of my closest friends. Just hold on, help is on the way."

Taking in steady breaths, I try to recognize his voice. Yet as soon as the sound of the ambulance's siren got louder, the colors behind him gradually faded away. I tried with all of my strength to say my last two words. If this was a dream, I wish he could prevent this incident. "Save me."

At that moment, I wanted to keep on living. I wish there was a way to do so...

Beep Beep Beep

I accidentally kicked on my handouts as I woke up in shock. My life is on the line now? Is that it? Will my life end by a mere accident? No, I can't. No, I won't let it happen. I'm still just a teenager and I have big dreams. Please, not just yet.

I closed my eyes while my inner voice talked to the silhouette I could partly remember. "Whoever you are, please find a way to change the future. Write down the date and time of the incident for me. Then, find me. "

Dan POV

*5:30 AM*

A female student was crossing the road with her headphones covering her ears. She stopped walking as she glanced at her phone's screen. Out of the blue, the black car took a sharp curve and began to lose control. "Vi!"

She didn't move an inch. Her eyes widened as she looked in my direction. The car forcefully bumped onto her as her body collapsed. Why would this suddenly happen? Why should this happen to her?!

I carefully lifted her head and laid it on my lap. “Please, don't die yet. Please, I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose one of my closest friends. Just hold on, help is on the way.”

She looked at me with her eyes half-opened. “Save me.”

I slowly closed her eyes and stopped breathing. The paramedics immediately lifted her onto the stretcher and brought her into the vehicle. All I could do was gaze at the whole scene. Suddenly, my head begins to throb in pain. A familiar voice started to speak in my mind, “Whoever you are, please find a way to change the future. Write down the date and time of the incident for me. Then, find me.”

I grabbed my phone and gazed at the time and date reflected on my phone’s screen.

My arm was stretched out in the air after I fell from my bed. It couldn’t be. I was all just a nightmare, Dan. Even if it felt true. It shouldn’t happen in reality. I won’t let it happen. I’ll just put a reminder on my calendar. Whatever that dream is, I’ll still follow this cautious feeling.

After a week, nothing unusual has happened yet. Just the usual study-on-the-go mindset while most of us submit our requirements in a rush. The teachers really stock our week with requirements, but I’m more worried about Vi. I’m worried about that realistic dream that I had before. And I don’t know why this is happening to me.

Vi was a bit out of breath after entering the room. She put down some handouts on the table and looked at me with determined eyes. I know that she’s trying to look energized but she looks so stressed out. “Hi, Dan. For today, let’s tackle and master Transformational Geometry since we’ve already finished the Basic Plane and Coordinate Geometry. Are you ready to begin? Or do you have any questions about our teacher’s lecture”

"Ready as I'll ever be. I think that I understood the lecture but maybe I need to work on some problems to assess myself."

“Alright, here what we are about to solve. Answer the questions on the first page of the handout then I’ll see whether you need my help or you just need practice.”

“Okay, Vi.”

These days, I’ve noticed that my scores in my seat works have improved compared to the previous quarters. It’s like motivation sparked within me. Well, not for all subjects, but I’m starting to like Math a little bit more. She’s so good at teaching these lessons, like a side of Vi that I haven’t noticed before. I wanted to be like her, a hardworking, kind, and talented student. I just don’t understand why she hasn’t been a DL yet.

Maybe I should treat her out for dinner.

An hour has already passed and all of the students left the room. "So, do you understand how we could reflect a plane on its coordinate plane?” asked Vi.

I replied, "Yes. Thank you for the clarification"

"If so, then we're done. Let’s go home"

"About that, can I treat you out for dinner? I’ll pay for everything."

She looked at me with apologetic eyes. “I’m sorry, I have to meet with someone today. Maybe some other time?”

"Alright, but tell me when you’re going to be free."

“Okay, Dan. Thank you for the treat in advance!”

My phone buzzed as she left the room first. It was the reminder on my calendar. I don’t want to be a stalker or anything, but just to be safe I’ll follow Vi and watch her only at a certain distance. In that way, I won’t be able to frighten her.

I was a meter away while she’s walking towards the town square and entered a familiar coffee shop. She sat on a wooden chair with an iced coffee in her right hand. I sat approximately 2 meters away from her. Nothing strange happened. Maybe the dream wasn’t real, I guess?

Yet she looked furious as she looked at her phone several times. It’s already been past an hour since we both sat in this coffee shop. She finally stood up and left the shop, I followed her out. I know this might seem creepy if she finds out but I need to follow my guts. To make sure that it won’t happen in real life.

Heavy rain started pouring down, exactly like what happened in my dream. No, it’s impossible. It couldn’t be. She took out her phone from her pocket and gazed at her phone. I spotted the exact car which lost its control in the rain. I immediately ran towards her and pulled her away from the streets. I looked at the car as it swerved towards the lamp post. Many people looked at the vehicle, and some even helped the driver. I feel a bit relieved now. But, Vi looks so annoyed at me. I knew that we haven’t fully fixed our friendship. I know that she isn’t in a good mood and she doesn’t want to see me, but I had to follow the inner voice.

“Why did you do that? Now, I’ll be late if I can’t catch a taxi soon!

“Look, I’m sorry. Watch where you’re going next time. You were almost caught up in an accident!”

“Were you stalking me? Did you think that I won't notice you in the background?”

“As I said, I didn’t mean to follow you around.”

“Oh, now you’ve admitted it. Why did you follow me? Can’t you at least give me some time away from you?”

“Vi, just please let me explain. I had a dream where you were involved in an accident, alright? I know it sounds crazy but haven’t you seen the car? I think you owe me ‘cause I might have saved your life.”

Her eyes widened. “Wait, did you say that you had a dream?”

“Yes, I know it sounds crazy but at least I prevented you from the accident.”

“But, how did you know about the exact time and date of the accident? Did a voice guide you?”

“Yes, how did you know?”

“Because it was my voice. You were the silhouette who saved me..”
