Chapter 16: My Song

Third Person POV

Breana was watching the whole exchange and eavesdrop on their conversation. She wanted to help the agitated cheerleader but couldn’t do so since they were not in good terms since yesterday.

---

On the stage, the emcee finally announced the next performers to come up, the school band. Alex had to fight her way in to sneak past the raging crowd. She need to be closer if she wants to take their photos.

The school band is surely popular. She notes as the cheering grew louder by the second.

Holding her camera, she prepares to snap photos of the different performances especially of the two ladies. The first part was a ballad by Jackson, making the ladies heart-eye the guy. After that, everyone was hyped by a jazz performed by the duo, Sunny and Jack. Sunny, in her knee-length floral dress and pumps, sashayed her way on the stage like she owns it.

“Sunny! Jackson! Wooh!” The crowd cheered ever wilder.

She exudes so much confidence in every step that Jack matched with his own enthusiasm and charisma. They sang and danced, both obviously enjoying the performance and the crowd’s reaction.

Alex was just awestruck at Sunny that she didn’t mind that the vocalist is with Jackson. She didn’t mind that Sunny has a boyfriend. She didn’t mind that her admiration might and will go beyond friendly or sisterly. Why? Because at this moment, all Alex sees is this wonderful person, the amazing Mitchelle Kim. Alex was so engrossed of her that she wasn’t aware of the drummer’s eyes locked on her.

Alex almost forgot to take pictures with all the staring and smiling she’s been doing the whole show. Then it was time for Breana and Sunny’s duet. The background music plays, initiating a melancholic aura. The crowd was silent. Bree caught Alex’ gaze as they start singing.

Alex didn’t notice her at first. Bree looks gorgeous in her tight-fitting white dress that went unnoticed a while back when she was behind the drums. Alex took some shots at them, individually and both. Just then, Bree started singing and she almost couldn’t believe her ears that she had to look away from the camera and look with her naked eyes and hear the woman properly.

"You left me memories,

Memories I couldn’t forget nor rewrite

So bad, I wish you the same fate"

She always found Bree’s voice soothing since they were children but she didn’t know the girl was this good – no, great even. The lines struck her. It was a confession from her. The singer kept her eyes on the person that had caused her to write the song she was singing now. Thru it, she wanted to bare herself open to her.

Alex realizes that. Her leaving had hurt Bree to the point that the girl had wanted her to feel the same amount of pain. To experience what she been through.

"I’m not the same person I was

And it wasn’t good

No, I’m not fine"

She did change. The once bubbly girl turned to shadow. Alex averted her gaze away from Bree. The gravity of her guilt once again weighing down on her.

"But I’m trying

To smile and laugh again

To be happy before you left

And maybe that’s fine"

The lines caught her attention. Alex looked back up and saw Bree smiling at her. Pain, sadness, relief and hope morphed into that upturned curve on her lips.

"I may be pathetic

But that’s the best I can do"

No, you are never that. Alex inwardly responded.

"I’m not an angel

I’m not a saint

I’m not that good of a person

I’m just me"

I know and I’m sorry for expecting you to be always understanding and forgiving without considering your feelings. I’m sorry for acting like I didn’t wronged you or that I didn’t remember. Alex thought.

She stares into Bree’s eyes with all sincerity, hoping her thoughts would somehow reach the singer’s mind.

They both feel like crying and they both know what the other’s feel. Sunny’s voice even added to the beauty of the song. Pain and sorrow were being channeled to the audience. Bree had to look away, fearing that her voice might crack if she gets too emotional. Alex just focused on taking pictures after that.

It took the band another song before ending their performance. It was to buy time for Ari. Bree gave her full support to the leader’s request of another song.

Nearing the end of the club fest, the cheerleading team made their performance, though not as perfect as what Ari and Sel have planned but the team made it worth watching as they wowed the audience with their several flips and coordinated dances and choreography.

It was noon when it ended and packed up. Ari found the time to inspect the roses delivered to her. It said:

To Maria Han

I couldn’t be more grateful to you for staying by Bree’s side and I know you might think I’m a selfish dumbass. Truth is, I WAS. I hope maybe you could give me the benefit of the doubt and see me in another light time. Can we be friends?

-Alex Song

The roses are yellow just as it signifies friendship which Alex is asking of her. Ari knows she didn’t give the girl a chance to prove herself the first time and the reason has something to do with Bree liking Alex.

Remembering the drummer, it dampens her mood even more. She was too proud to ask forgiveness from Bree as opposed to how humble Alex is in doing things like this. She might as well thank Alex answering her in the call a while back.

Then she felt her phone buzzed. She opened the message.

It was Sunny.

S: Where are you? Come at the usual place for the after parties. :)

She wanted to be alone but eating and drinking alcohol with her friends might be a good way to deflect the negative emotions stirring in her, the frustration from the performance, her longing to Breana and the growing green-eyed monster towards Alex. Drowning those feelings in alcohol seems the best answer to her especially that most of her feelings are unjustifiable. Feelings that she does not deserve to have, not at where she stands in Bree’s life.
