Alto

“Why is red not good? What does it mean?” Janus asked, worried.

“Red is a warning. It means danger, Sherlock,” Alto rolled his eyes. “What we need to do now is find a way into this goddamn city.” In his frustration, Alto picked up a rock from the ground and chucked it at the seal. Janus almost died laughing after he saw how the rock deflected off of the seal and hit Alto square in the chest, causing him to stumble backward.

“No need, Mr. Aureum, I already knew you were here,” a calm voice spoke. Alto’s eyes widened subconsciously. Alto Aureum. “By the time you’d blasted yourself into the air I contacted ULTRASONIC to take you back.” The voice came from a girl who looked way more mature than the boys did. She had a high ponytail and was dressed in a navy blue jumpsuit that was loose fitting but tightened at her waist. The sound of her boots grew louder with every step she made towards us. Alto could feel his shoulders stiffening with the mention of ULTRASONIC.

“Aureum? Don’t you mean Ansel?” Janus asked.

“Didn’t the gentleman standing on your left just fly 20 meters into the air?”

“That would be me,” Alto said, raising his hand to indicate his presence. “When I first woke up, my first thought was a name. Alto Aureum. It’s not me though, I’m Mateo. Mateo Queenley.” The girl looked at Alto like she was bored, then moved on with her speech.

“I'm Raelynn and you guys are in luck because, no, I didn’t call ULTRASONIC. In fact, I'm the only person who knows about it in the whole city. And Mr. Ansel,” she paused for a moment. “I know you very well.”

“You seem familiar but I don’t remember seeing you,” Janus squinted as he walked closer to Raelynn. She rested her left hand gently on his shoulder and looked into his eyes, like she was sending a message through her mind. It seemed to be less than a second later that Alto watched as Janus stood dumbfounded while Raelynn was sashaying away. He noticed how Janus’s eyes started to sparkle once again.

“Don’t go anywhere. You know she led you here. I’ll be back at midnight,” Raelynn yelled behind her back. “Oh and don’t let them see you!”

“Yeah, like we can go anywhere,” Alto murmured.

“I can hear you!” She yelled, not looking back. Interesting. At this point she was already a speck in the distance. Alto looked back at his friend, still staring off into space. Right then he realized that Janus’s eyes glistened because of the tears pooling inside them.

“Mica,” he whispered as he lowered his eyes. “Mica.”
