9. THE UNEASY HAPINESS
Next morning I woke up pretty early. I got up and finish my morning routine. Then I left my room and finished my daily home essential work. After setting everything, I turned toward the kitchen again to make myself a cup of coffee. As I turned he was standing very next to me. I got startled and a scream was about to leave my larynx.
“Wohh. It’s me. Noah.” He said supporting me and preventing me from falling back.
“Ahh. You just gave me a heart attack.” I replied balancing my gait.
My heart was pounding. It took a while for me to calm down. I let out a sigh and turned toward him.
“It’s only 6 am. You never get up this early. Are you going somewhere again brother...?” I asked him sarcastically.
“No. I just can’t sleep so I got up. And you can call me by my name.” He said rubbing his eyes.
“But mother...” I was not finished and he cut me off.
“At least in her absence.”
“ok.” I was going insane with happiness and surprises. In this week...he leaves a note for me, he brought me a gift and now he was asking me be a normal sister. I was not able to believe what was happening. It was like a fantasy. It was like a dream filled with happiness and joy.
I was still admiring him. His big round black eyes, his black messy hairs, his raspy morning voice....everything was cute about him.
“Can you make me a coffee...?” he asked me.
“Ya. Sure. I was about to made mine.” I replied turning my gaze away from him and making my way toward kitchen. He followed me to the kitchen.”
I made coffee for both of us. “Do you want to come to lawn for coffee with me...?” I asked him hesitantly.
“Ok. Let’s go.” He holds my hand and we both landed in the lawn.
The air was still cold and fresh. Birds were chirping on trees and sparrows were hopping here and there on twinges. Sun was going up in the sky fading away the darkness of night. We both were enjoying our coffee with the early morning environment. I finished my coffee and started to look out my plants.
“”what are you doing...?” he asked me putting his empty coffee mug on the table.
“My plants are looking dull. They need some manure. I will fix this after school today.” I said smiling at him.
“It’s ok. I can do that.” He said putting his hands across his chest. I looked at him with amazement.
“Really...?” my eyes grew bigger.
“I’m not having school today. And there is nothing to at home. So I can do this.” He replied holding my arm and leading me toward inside.
“You should get ready for school.” He said without looking at me and grabbing both cups of coffee.
I was silent. This is not a dream. It can’t be true. This happiness is so much to handle. He looked at me, into my eyes and smiled at me.
“Your round eyes look cute.” I blushed a bit at his comment and move inside. “Let me clean...” I asked him pulling my hands for coffee mugs.
“I can take care of that. You go and get ready. Ok.” He said leaving me behind in hall, making his way to the kitchen.
Then I made my way to my room. It was already 7. I cursed myself and hurried to the bathroom. I got ready and took my bag and went down stairs. Everybody was having breakfast already.
“You are late.” Mother yelled at me.
“Good morning. I’m sorry I was getting ready for school.” Saying this I went to the kitchen counter and packed my lunch. I turned around and she was standing there, blocking my way. My dad and Noah were watching her from behind. She was about to hit me with her hand when Noah interrupted her.
“Mom. Move aside. I have to drink water.” And she back off. I slip off from there and ran toward the main door. I open the door and went out of the house. I was panting like an athlete. I was about to cry but somehow I handled myself. Suddenly I heard the door open behind me.
“Hey! You left your bottle.” It was Noah with my water bottle in his hand. He handed the bottle to me and smiled toward me.
“You ok...?” he asked me observing sweat beads on my forehead.
“Y-yes. I’m ok.” I replied back taking the bottle and wiping the sweat off my forehead.
“Take care.” And he clears his throat. “And we should drink coffee often. Together.” He added without looking at me, patting my head. I nodded in a yes without saying anything. He gave me happy look with a bright smile and went inside closing the door.
I looked at the water bottle in my hand, smiled and moved for the school.
Zoe was already there at the corner of the street waiting for me.
“Come on you lazy girl” she yelled at me as she saw me.
“Good morning.” I smiled at her.
“Very good morning. Someone is in a good mood today. Anything special.” She asked me putting her hand across my shoulder. And those cold morning moments of coffee with Noah ran through my mind.
“No. Nothing.” I replied back without looking at her.
“Oh. Ok.” She said. After about twenty minutes we were in front of our school. I let out a big sigh and head toward out class. It was a dull day.
And then bell rings. It was lunch break.
“Hey Licia! Let’s go to the canteen.” Zoe yelled at me. I took my lunch and we both made our way toward canteen. It was so crowd there. But Zoe was lucky to have so many fans we got a table. We sat down and I started to open my lunch and Zoe went to the counter to get something for her. That place was so loud. Everyone was chatting about one or the other thing.
“It’s not so cold but it’s ok.” She said popping up the can of soda. I was already munching on my lunch. I slid the box toward her but she denied.
“What happened yesterday...? Everything is good at home...?” I asked her gulping soda that she have brought me.
“Ya. Everything is fine. My granny got asthmatic attack and nobody was home. So neighbours called me to get to her. They were not able to find her medication.” She said with a blunt look on her face.
“I hope she is doing fine now. She will be good soon.” I tried to reassure her. She smiled at me.
“How was your day at school without me...? Did you get bore without me or you get a boyfriend...?” she asked me sarcastically, putting her hand in her palm on the table, looking into my eyes.
As she said the word boyfriend a flash of that stranger came to my mind. I almost chocked on my food. I got startled.
“What?! What you just said...? No!” I said making myself calm. She was laughing so hard at my reaction. I gave her a dare look and slapped her on back of her other hand. I closed my lunch box and gulped my remaining soda.
“Should I tell her about him...?”
