"It can't be true!" He was screaming in his head a denial of what Nicodemus had said. It was not a surprise to him that his grandfather had been a powerful mage on the battlefield. Nor was it a surprise to Daniel that his grandfather Zekant had defended and fought for the Empire. It wasn't even a surprise to hear that Zekant begged for his life or even that the Emperor had granted it. His grandfather had always been dedicated to him, and from what he knew, the Emperor was an honorable man.

The surprise and horror that he felt in his heart were due to the revelations that his parents had fought on behalf of the resistance. The very thought that his father Zachariah, the famed Ascended who had destroyed the Hades Dungeon, was a traitor to the Empire made him sick to his stomach. He didn't believe it.
