True Identity [31]

"My mother was involved in this too?" I asked, surprised at my own question. Involvement of my mom only meant one thing. Whatever that was happening was bigger and ran more deeper than I had expected.

"Go home Katherine. This is not a place you should be at. Head back home and never come back here." He said in a crabby tone.

"I'm not going back anywhere until you tell me what's happening." I yelled.

"Fine then." He straightened and walked towards the table in the center. He flicked his hand forwards and a chair slid out in my direction on its own. "You might want to sit down for this." He warned.

He sounded irritated by my pestering and I was afraid he would change his mind and send me home. So instead of defying him further, I settled as he ordered.

He held the back of a chair from one hand and put the other in his pocket. "The two men who cornered you in the alley that night were possessed by demons." He said casually as if coming across demons was a normal thing for him.

Ice kissed my back and I was starting to feel panic in my system. "Demons?" I blurted at the mention.

"Yes. Demons. And one of a higher demon wants you dead. Those were the lower rank demons you came across that night. They were sent by some other demon to kill you." He explained.

I felt a wave of novel terror wash over me. Demons. I never thought about it. Whatever I have learnt from the internet directed my doubts towards fairies and witches. I never had the foggiest idea that it would be demons who were behind this.

"But why do they want to kill me?" I managed to say.

He took a deep breath and stared at the ceiling for a second. Both his hands were holding the back of the chair firmly. "It's a long story Katherine. I hope you are prepared for this."

His warnings were doing me no good. Suddenly, coming here seemed like a wrong decision. But I had already come this far to the truth and now there was no turning back. Anticipation was increasing my pulse and I hoped whatever comes next was something I was totally prepared for.

"You are a witch Katherine. Just like your mother was. Just like I am." He stated and looked at me as if to read my mind.

The sky rumbled loudly as a thunderbolt exploded in the sky. The words themselves were a bolt from the blue. I felt my mouth fall open at his words. I have assumed so many things but not this. Up until now, I knew I was a part of all this but never have I ever wondered how big that part was. I felt like someone has flunged a bucket full of ice cold water on my face. The insides of my palms have began to get sweaty and my heart hammered loudly in my chest. I could feel my blood run with a fast pace and a loud ringing in my ears. It was too much for me too take. I couldn't believe what he said. But a part of my heart has already anticipated something as shocking as this, and it told me it was true. If not for the chair, I might have already landed on the ground.

"Katherine. . ." I heard a voice. A raspy one. Suddenly, I realized where I was. Finn Marshall was now beside my chair. "Are you alright?" He asked, snatching me out of my thoughts.

"I am fine. I was. . . just a little taken aback." I lied. The truth was, I was so much perplexed by the statement I could not decide how to react to it.

"Good. You need to maintain your composure. There are so many things you need to know but . . . if you want then you can still walk away from this."

"No." I blurted instantly. "I am not going anywhere." I replied and took a deep breath. No matter how much shocking it was going to be, I am not giving up now.

He walked towards the bookshelf and took out a book. Keeping it on the table he flipped swiftly through the pages to find something. The book appeared to be a journal, old and tattered from the edges. Taking out a picture from the journal, he handed it to me.

It was a picture when my mom must have been around my age, maybe a year older than me. She had same brunette hair as mine and was standing next to a guy, who resembled Finn Marshall in so many features. The same thin lips. The same black hair, some of which were now pepper with time. The same built. It was a picture of my mom and Finn Marshall taken in a flower garden. Her head rested on his shoulder and both of them smiled brightly.

"Your mother and I were friends since our childhood." He said. I looked again at the picture. They seemed more than friends to me. "These demons they are trying to kill you to take revenge for what your mother did to them." He added and extended his hand. I gave the picture back to him and he placed it inside the journal, stuffing it back in the bookshelf.

"Is there . . . a hell?" I asked realizing it was demons who were after me.

"Yes, there is a hell." He began, "Demons born out of the human filth, greed, lust and several other emotions reside in hell." He said and took another book out of the shelf, placing it in front of me, on the small space left on the table. "Often these demons find their way out of hell and are captivated by the beauty and peace they find on earth so much that they want to stay here forever. But the apple never falls far from the tree. These demons are born out of human filth and they can never leave their ways behind. Human possession, mass slaughtering of animals sometimes villages too, deadly diseases, unusual deaths like accidents, plane crashes and a lot more things. All of these are the work of demons."

"You can find all the information about demons in this book." He pushed the book forward towards me and then folded his hands back across his chest. "What's important for you right now is to know why you are in the middle of all this. . ." He paused and sighed again. "Eighteen years ago, a higher demon, Andromalius walked out of hell. The demon wanted power to rule over humans, to gain enormous prestige. He manipulated many witches into believing that with his help witches can gain equal status in the society and live freely without hiding their real identities. And many of them believed in his words and joined him, turning their backs on the true form of magic."

"True form of magic?" It was too much for me to understand and remember. I was starting to mix things. Earlier, I wished about obtaining the answers, now all I could wish about was comprehending them.
