The hunters had them all pinned down and were picking the wolves off one by one. It was impossible for any of the wolves or Miuo to get close to them since the hunters had ranged weapons.
*Yelp* Another wolf hit the dirt as two arrows found their way onto its body. Miuo squeezed his knife tightly and ran at the closest hunter who was behind a tree loading up another arrow for his crossbow. Miuo surprised the hunter and caused him to drop his arrow and injure his hand as the spring came back down.
The hunter yelled out in pain and then muttered what sounded like a curse. The hunter grabbed Miuo's wrist as he was able to stab him and shouted something at him. Miuo didn't understand what the hunter was saying and growled back at him, making sure the hunter knew what his intentions were.
The two struggled for a good while before another hunter rushed over to help his fellow comrade. The second hunter shoved Miuo away from the first hunter, pulled out his hatchet, and charged at Miuo. Miuo knocked the hunter's weapon out of his hand by slamming his arm with his body. The hatchet flew through the air and hit the first hunter square in the face as he was reloading his crossbow, killing him instantly.
The second hunter glanced back and saw what happened. He angrily shouted something at Miuo before he ran at him with his hands outstretched in an attempt to grab Miuo. But the hunter made a mistake and had forgotten that Miuo had a weapon in his hand. Miuo slashed his knife at the hunter's open hands, leaving a nasty cut that went hormonally through both his hands. The hunter screamed in pain and backed away from Miuo.
But Miuo wasn't about to let the hunter get away from him, especially after what he and his friends did to his pack. Miuo charged at the man with his arm raised, ready to stab him. The hunter brought both his arms up to protect himself but at the last second, Miuo flipped his knife around, lowered his arm, and stabbed the hunter in his stomach.
The hunter put his large bloody hands on Miuo's arms and tried to pull out the knife. He had a shocked expression on his face as if he couldn't believe that this was happening to him. The hunter threw out blood and lost his balance, crumbling down to the ground while still holding onto Miuo's arms. The life in the hunter's eyes drained as he lost his fight against death and fell backward onto his back. The knife slipped out of the hunter's stomach which was now oozing with blood.
Miuo took several deep breaths and then looked around the camp. Bodies littered the forest floor, both friend and foe alike. But even though both sides had suffered tremendous losses, the battle continued. Only a couple of wolves remained and most of them were injured one way or another.
The hunters weren't looking too good either. They had lost more than half their members and were starting to panic a little. However, in terms of who had the advantage in this battle, it would be the hunters. They outnumbered Miuo and the wolves and also had ranged weapons. Even with how agile the wolves were, it was impossible to evade attacks from multiple hunters at once.
They couldn't win this fight and both the wolves and Miuo knew it, but they couldn't retreat anymore either. They had lost the majority of their pack and the location of their den was exposed. The only choice left was to fight to the death and take down as many of the hunters as they could with them.
Miuo and the wolves fought to the bitter end. He was shot left and right by arrows, but he continued to stand and took down the hunters one after another. Even after the remaining wolves fell, including Io who managed to take down three more hunters with him before going down, Miuo stood strong.
He had lost everything. His family, friends, and his new life. He was covered from head to toe with blood, both belonging to his own and the enemy. The only thing that Miuo felt left was pain and anger. The hunters all looked at Miuo with fearful faces. Despite having so many arrows in him and losing so much blood, Miuo was still standing. They all started saying the same word over and over and Miuo didn't need to understand their language to know what they were saying. They were all calling him 'monster.'
The hunters continued firing arrows at Miuo. After taking six more shots, Miuo felt his body start to give out. Mustering what was left of his strength, Miuo lifted his arm up, squeezing the knife which was drenched with blood. He let out one last blood-curdling warcry and threw it at the hunter all the way in the back, hitting him in the neck and killing him.
The last four hunters started shouting out in panic and fear. They shot two more arrows at Miuo with one piercing his shoulder and the other finding its way to his heart. Miuo doubled over and fell to the ground. His vision blurred as his body slowly rolled until he was on his back. His hearing was muffled but Miuo could roughly make out the hunters celebrating their victory. He wanted to get back up and kill them but he didn't have the strength to.
Miuo looked up at the sky and saw the outline of the moon. It was a full moon tonight. Blood trickled down from his forehead and seeped into his eyes. It stung a little but Miuo kept his eyes open. The moon was now a fuzzy red sphere, almost as if it were alive.
One of the hunters walked over to Miuo and saw that he was still barely alive. He informed the other three and they began to stomp and kick him. The four of them laughed as they did so. The tallest one put his foot on top of an arrow that was in Miuo's stomach and pressed down hard on it. Blood spurt out of Miuo's mouth and he blacked out for a split second. The hunters continued torturing Miuo for a bit before they got bored and walked away.
At this point, Miuo was on the verge of death, and surprisingly not already dead. His body had grown extremely tough from living with the wolves for so long. Miuo struggled to keep his eyes open but fatigue very quickly overwhelmed him and he gave in. Miuo closed his eyes and embraced his death. He had many regrets in this life, but he would just have to accept the fact that he wouldn't be able to fix them.
But by some miracle or cruel fate act by the god, he didn't die. Miuo felt pain like he never felt before. His entire body writhed in agony as he felt himself change. His arms grew larger, his nails turned into claws, and his skin into fur. Without even thinking, Miuo got up from the floor and pulled all the arrows out of his body. He opened his jaws and howled at the moon. His voice shook the entire forest and turned the moon from white to red.
His red coat of fur gleamed under the light of the blood moon, stained with the blood of his family. Miuo's senses became many times sharper. He heard sounds that he never heard before. He smelled scents that he never knew even existed. He also saw further and clearer than he ever did before.
He heard the racing heartbeats of the four hunters as they panicked upon hearing his howl. He smelled their fear as they p*ssed their pants upon seeing his monstrous form. And lastly, he saw the terrified looks on their faces as they realized what was going to become of them.
Miuo didn't know why but he suddenly felt himself smiling as he walked towards the four hunters. Maybe it was the cruelty that he had inherited from being a human. Yes, that must be it. Since after all, if there is one lesson that he learned from the villagers, it's that debts must always be repaid. The four hunters took everything that was precious from him. It was time for him to return the favor.
Miuo laughed as he inched closer and closer to the four hunters who were frozen in place by fear. They didn't move even when he was right on top of them. Miuo grinned, showing his massive fangs to the already stunned men. That night, the sounds of screams and cries for help and mercy shook the forest, instead of the usual peaceful silence.
