Training Before The Mission II

Kies had not even taken into consideration those two things that Arc warned him about when it came to creating spells. Luckily, Arc was here to warn him about the dangers before he started doing so.

"Generally, the more lines that a spell has, the more magic is required to cast it," Arc told Kies. "And no, more lines does not necessarily mean that the spell is more powerful. The more lines, the more precise the spell. In other words, it is more likely to do exactly what you want it to do," Arc quickly added.

"Huh, so magic is basically just a word game?"

"You can think of it like that."

"Why is that?"

"Sorry, I do not think I understand what you are trying to ask."

Kies took a moment to think of a way to word his question for Arc. "If words invoke magic then doesn't that mean anyone can create a spell just by putting the right words together, whether on purpose or by accident. If that's the case then why do I never see people use any more than a couple of different spells when they can create whatever spell they want?"

"That is an easy but long question to answer. Simply put, the language that we are conversing in right now, Centrolio, is a magic language. The people of this land used to speak in various and very different languages, but once they discovered that certain sounds carried power, they began to experiment with them. Through centuries of experimentation and data collection, a new language was developed, being Centrolio, the magic language."

"Then why do I see that there are people who can cast spells in other languages," Kies asked, remembering that Jasyeu talked and chanted spells in ancient demonic.

"Centrolio is not the only magic language. It is the simplest as you can just join words together to create any spell you want. There are languages much better suited for magic than Centrolio. For example, there is Elvish, Beast-Tongue, Voice of the D*mned, and many more. The most obvious example as you may have seen already is demonic. Demonic is a complex magic language and is extremely different from Centrolio. You cannot just join words together to create a spell. There are certain rules you must follow. Because of this, most demons can only use a handful of spells, but those spells are also much more powerful than spells in Centrolio. With that being said, Ancient Demonic is a more powerful magic language than the current Demonic you hear, but because of how difficult it was to chant spells, it was replaced with the modern one."

Kies listened to Arc's entire explanation and after it was finished, he shook his head. "I see... But you still haven't answered my question." Arc had explained to him the origin of the magic languages, but not why people used so few spells, especially after Arc had explained how simple it was to create spells in Centrolio.

"Well, there are many reasons for that. First of all, you need to be born with the ability to gather magic. Second of all, there are many different types of magic, and a person is usually born with the ability to use one type, just like how you can only use wind magic. The reason for this is because magic conflicts with each other. A person who uses fire magic cannot use water magic or any of its variants such as ice. And finally third of all, as you have just seen for yourself, there are certain chants that are more efficient than others. There is no point in having a spell for every single scenario when you can just use a spell you already know that could deal with the issue."

Another hefty explanation by Arc, but Kies got the answer to his question now. "Oh... I forgot about that." Kies had recently been surrounded by people who were able to use magic. He had forgotten that people needed to be born with the ability to use magic in the first place.

"Anyhow, seeing that you are so interested in learning new spells, I found a couple of old ones that were hidden away in the Archive. They are in another language but I will translate to you the Centrolio equivalent of them." The bracelet lit up and displayed a holographic screen in front of Kies. Several lines of words appeared on the screen. "I am not sure if these spells work as well in Centrolio, but nevertheless they should work."

There were a total of two spells on the screen. It wasn't much but Kies wasn't going to complain about it. Excited to see what they did, Kies immediately started to chant the first spell he saw, but before he could, Arc took away the screen and said, "A warning beforehand, these two spells require a lot of magic to cast, so be careful."

"Okay, got it." Kies still hadn't gotten all his magic back from his fight with Ammine, but he felt that enough of it was back for him to cast the spells.

The screen popped back up again and Kies started chanting the first spell again. "Let me forsake these lands and take to the winds. Leave all those who stand before me breathless." The moment Kies finished saying the spell, he felt his magic drop almost to rock bottom. He stumbled to a nearby tree and placed his hand on it for support, but to his surprise, his hand went straight through it. He planted his hands on the dirt and steadied himself before slowly getting back up.

"I did warn you about it."

"What does this spell do?" Kies asked, knowing that it definitely had something to do with how his hand and his entire arm went through the tree.

"Look down and see the answer for yourself."

Kies looked down at his body and saw that it was almost transparent. There was also a thin layer of wind surrounding his body. From the looks of it, Kies took a guess that the spell turned his body into air or something like that. Kies tried waving his hand through the tree again and saw that it passed through.

"The spell lasts about twenty seconds. Of course, you can supply it with more magic to keep it going, but I doubt that you have enough for that." Just as Arc finished telling Kies that, the spell wore off and he saw that his body was back to normal.

"Like any spell, there are restrictions to it. For example, you cannot go through the ground nor through walls with it. Those two are the biggest restrictions for that spell and as for the rest, it is better if you find out for yourself."

"What does the other spell do?" Kies read the lines for the second spell on the screen but couldn't figure out what it did from the words alone. It was a bad idea for him to find out by casting that spell as well since he was practically out of magic right now.

"I am glad that you are asking me instead of chanting the spell and finding out for yourself. This spell takes several times more magic to cast than the spell you just used."

"So it's a very powerful spell?"

"Yes, it is."
