Ammine scouted the walls with her magic-enhanced eyes and saw that there were dents and holes all over the walls from Otane's siege, but most of them had guards stationed at them or were under repair. It was impossible for them to get in through one of those holes. "We will have to get in another way," she said after searching the walls.
"Can't we fly over," Kies suggested. Ammine and Falte could carry him and Jasyeu over the walls and they could get in easily that way.
"Not the best idea," Falte turned Kies' idea down. "People will see us if we fly over the wall, and that would be the fastest way to jeopardize the mission," he explained.
"What about- Hm... Actually, never mind," Falte turned down his own idea without even telling the rest about it. The group thought about ways they could get into Silverfield without raising an alarm, but couldn't think of a single way. While everyone was scratching their heads, Jasyeu was playing around with her magic next to a tree.
An idea suddenly came to Kies and he told the other two about the idea. "If we can't go over, can't we go under?"
"Uh... That could work," Fallte agreed. "But we have to find someplace where there aren't any people watching, and before that, we need some way to dig through the earth in the first place."
Ammine went over to Jasyeu and spoke to her in Old Demonic. Jasyeu said something back to her and Ammine came back over to the two. "We have the latter. Jasyeu says that she could dig a tunnel under the walls and fill it back up within seconds. And as for the first problem, I could fly high above the kingdom where no one could see me and find a place to dig under," she said.
"Hm... Guess we're going with that then," Falte accepted the plan.
"Okay, hold onto this for a bit," Ammine took off her cloak and tossed it to Falte, and then immediately took off to the skies, sending dirt everywhere as she took off.
Kies looked up but couldn't see where she was. She managed to fly high enough to get out of their sight in less than one second. This wasn't his first time seeing it, but it was still unbelievable how fast she could fly.
The three waited for Ammine to come back, which took her around ten minutes. She didn't look very happy and Kies thought that she wasn't able to find a place but she did. "There is an empty area, but it's quite far away from here. We won't be able to walk to it without being spotted. We'll have to wait until night to get in."
"That's no problem. We can wait until then," Falte said.
Ammine scowled and said, "We could wait until tonight, but what about Messa? We need to get to her as soon as possible before they decide to execute her."
"That is true, but we need to worry about ourselves first. We must proceed with caution. Getting to her is meaningless if we are caught in the process. Not only would we fail our mission, but I doubt we could get Messa out safely if that happens," Falte told Ammine.
"Tch." Ammine shook her head and fidgeted a bit. She opened her mouth a few times like she wanted to say something but didn't and after a few seconds, walked back into the misty forest. Jasyeu saw her go in and followed her into the forest as well, leaving Kies and Falte by themselves at the outskirts of the forest.
Kies didn't know what to say to the demon and they sat quietly for a while until boredom finally took over him. "Is there a reason why Ammine is so worried about Messa?" Kies asked Falte. It seemed like Ammine cared a lot for Messa and that led him to think that they had a close relationship with each other. Maybe they were siblings or something like that.
"Ammine and Messa? I'm not sure myself," he told Kies. "I don't think they're close. I never actually saw them talk to each other that much."
"Then why is she acting that way?" Kies asked.
"Well, she's not the only one who wants to rescue Messa as soon as possible. I want to as well."
"Really? You don't show it?" Kies told him. It was obvious how worried Ammine was about Messa, but Falte on the other hand didn't really seem to care.
"Hey, I'm not the only demon that is like this you know. Practically everyone else back in the village is the exact same. Our race fights a lot and we lose our lives more often than you think, Dying is pretty normal to us. We're not like the humans or the elves who mourn every death, but we're not heartless either. If one of our kind is in trouble, we would save them," he explained.
Kies thought about what Falte said and thought back to the brawl at the village. Despite how serious the situation was, the demons didn't really seem to take things seriously. Although their fellow demons had been captured by the Otanians, they were all still acting as if nothing serious happened.
"In all honesty, Lord Tornon and Ammine are probably the odd ones out when compared to the rest of us demons," Falte pointed out to Kies.
"Hm? How?"
"Unlike the rest of us, they care a lot about every single demon and would risk their lives to save them. If something gets too dangerous for me, I would just run. The same could be said for every other demon I know except for those two."
"Oh..." Kies found it strange how the demons didn't seem to care much for one another, but apparently, it was normal for them. It made him wonder how people from other races treat each other. So far, he has met only two other races. The beastmen treat each other like family and the undead didn't seem to care about each other at all.
Everyone waited until it was dark to the point where they wouldn't be spotted as they moved around the perimeters of the wall. Ammine led the group to the spot where she said was empty. Upon arrival, Jasyeu immediately began using her magic to dig a hole under the wall.
"Luckily for us, the moon isn't that bright today," Falte commented.
Kies looked up at the moon and saw that it was about a quarter in size. It didn't emit much light which made it easy for them to sneak past all the soldiers who were standing guard at the holes in the wall. They almost got caught twice due to Jasyeu being startled by small animals hiding in the grass. Fortunately for them, Falte saved them both times by acting quickly and casting illusion magic on them, and made them look like animals.
When the soldiers shone their light on them, all they saw were four big animals running away which surprised them but didn't raise any suspicion. After almost being caught those two times, Ammine decided to walk in front of Jasyeu so it wouldn't happen again.
The three of them watched Jasyeu as she dug through the dirt. It didn't make as much noise as they thought it would have, which was a good thing. The last thing they wanted was someone hearing them and reporting it.
A few minutes passed and Jasyeu called out to Ammine and told her something. Kies couldn't understand what she said but judging from the tone of her voice, it sounded like there was a problem.
"What did she say?" Kies asked Ammine after they finished talking to each other.
"We have a problem," she told him.
Kies had guessed right. They did have a problem, but what was it?
"The walls go down into the ground pretty deep. It's going to take a while for her to get through," she explained. The three of them looked down the hole and saw that it was already several meters deep but the Jasyeu was still unable to find where the wall ended.
Kies backed up from the hole and looked around while the other two were figuring out something. An idea came to his mind. It was the same idea from before but he was sure that they could pull it off now. "I think we can fly over the wall now." It was really dark and there shouldn't be many people outside. It was probably safe for them to fly over now.
