Demon Reconnaissance IV

After Kies told Falte most of everything that happened, the demon walked away. He took the food and water from Kies and was going to bring them to everyone else. He didn't tell Kies anything else and just left him there. Kies was unsure of what to do and just went back to the houses and sat down next to one of them.

He really hoped that Arc could find the reason why he was losing his memories and emotions sometime soon. It was really starting to bother him. He felt that there were a lot of other important things that he had forgotten about. He was losing what made him, him.

Kies got up and was just about to take a stroll around the slums when Falte approached him with something in his hand. "We got our first orders just now," he said while waving the envelope that was in his hands.

"Our orders? Did someone deliver it?"

"No one did since they couldn't get in. It was sent via magic," Falte told him. "And very complicated magic at that, which I don't want to try to explain to you," he added after a short pause.

Kies wasn't going to ask about it anyway since he wasn't in the mood to. Even if Falte did try to explain the magic to him, it wasn't like he could learn it, so there wasn't really a point other than out of curiosity. "What does it say?" he asked about the orders.

Falte took the piece of paper out of the already opened envelope and handed it to Kies to read.

Dispose of this letter after reading.

I assume that you all made it into Silverfield safely and without being caught. Your first task is to investigate the new king and determine if he is a threat or not. While you are at it, if you are able to, investigate the people close to him as well and see if they pose a threat too. Send a report back in two weeks.

At the very bottom of the letter was a purple symbol in the shape of a circle. There were also tiny dots on it, and Kies thought that they might be words, but they were too small to make out. "What's this?" Kies pointed at it.

"That's a curse placed over the letter. If anyone that isn't a demon or you touches the letter, they will explode. After that, the letter will explode as well. And then finally, the circle expands and explodes a third time for safe measure."

"Oh."

"Best not poke it too much. I know the person whose magic this belongs to and his magic tends to be very unstable," Falte warned him, seeing that Kies was tracing his finger around the tiny runic circle. He immediately retracted his finger, folded the letter, and returned it to Falte who put it back into the envelope. "Time to get rid of this. You wouldn't have happened to have a match on you by any chance, would you?"

"No." Kies had nothing on him at all other than the dragonskin pouch and the moonstone. He could've brought some back in town, but no one told him to. He could always go back and get some now, but it was getting rather dark.

"I guess I'll just have Jasyeu bury this then," Falte decided. He turned around and headed back into the house that the other three were in. He stopped midway and said, "The mission starts tomorrow. We plan out things tonight."

"Got it."

After telling Kies that, Falte continued to the house without stopping and went in. While the four of them were doing whatever it was that they were doing in there, Kies walked away from the houses and took a stroll around the slums as he had originally planned to. There was still plenty of time left in the day, and he didn't know what to do.

Kies could always practice magic, but he could practice for all he wanted and still not improve by that much. What he really needed was actual fighting experience, and before that, a reason to even fight. Right now he was fighting someone else's war. All of this was forced onto him and he didn't want to do it.

Kies thought about just leaving, but there was no point. He had nowhere to return to and he had the feeling that the demons would easily be able to find him again. He really didn't know what he was doing all this for. For the time being, the only thing that he can do is follow. Or maybe...

Kies took out the necklace from beneath his shirt and looked at it. Without a doubt, this was something that was linked to his life here. Maybe if he found who this belonged to or who gave this to him, he might just regain some of his memories.

That's decided then. While he was here, he would try to unravel his past. Though, he would have to do this in secret since he would get in trouble if they found out what he was doing. So far, his only clues were this necklace, the girl, and maybe the wind spirit. It was going to be difficult, but at the very least, he had a starting point.
