Underworldly Dealings I

After Kies finished explaining most of what happened after he got out of the sewers to Ammine, excluding the parts where he paid a visit to the graveyard for obvious reasons, Kies went back to the battered house that was shared with Falte and sat down.

There were some cracks on the ceiling and drops of water fell from it and wet the floor. After Falte almost slipped and fell on his back while walking around, he grumpily went outside and grabbed a small wooden box, and brought it back in. He placed it under the crack to catch the water so that he wouldn't slip again.

Kies remembered that the demons hadn't had anything to eat the entire day and offered to go outside to get them something to which Falte declined. "We demons can go a long time without eating so don't worry about it. We're used to going days or even weeks without food whenever we go on missions. Of course, if we can, we would rather choose to eat, but on a mission like this, we eat only when we really have to," he explained.

Their kind was used to traveling and moving around for long periods of time without food. Of course, they still needed water, but they could last pretty long without that too. "I think we can go around a week without water." Water was one of the main things that all living things needed to stay alive. Even if demons could go around a month without food, they couldn't even last half that long without water.

Everything needed water to survive. Well... expect Kies that is. Did that mean that he couldn't be considered a living thing? After all, he didn't need food or water to survive. The same applied to the undead and they weren't classified as alive. That was something to think about while he waited for the rain to end. He couldn't go outside to train or walk around in this weather. Well, he could but it wouldn't be very fun.

On the bright side, the rain helped him get his thoughts together. Since it wasn't the best time to go outside right now, Kies decided to use this opportunity to sort out his thoughts. Kies took out the bird necklace from inside his shirt. It was still in one piece and in perfect condition despite everything that he went through today.

Looking at this, he thought back to the girl that he encountered at the graveyard. That was his sister. That meant that he had a family here somewhere. By finding her again, he could figure out his past and what happened to him.

He was starting to forget why he was even with the demons in the first place. He vaguely remembered what happened back then. Did he get abducted by them or did he willingly follow them? Kies really didn't know. His memory was practically a joke right now and he could hardly recall the things he did the previous few days. But for whatever reason, this mostly only applied to his short-term memories. He also forgot about a lot of things that happened long ago but there were still a few things that stuck to him and they were still crystal clear.

He remembered being raised in an orphanage and being adopted by someone. He didn't know who that someone was but it was probably related to the family of that girl. This meant that they weren't his real family and they weren't related by blood, which was pretty obvious as he was born from a magic crystal and was of a different race.

Well, he knew his name so maybe if he could find that orphanage then he could use that information and trace it back to the people who adopted him. That was a good idea to keep in mind in case he ever had the opportunity to do it. That and also going back to the graveyard and waiting for the girl to come and visit his grave again.

"What's that in your hand?" Falte noticed that Kies was holding something in his hand and was also spaced out. "Also, what are you thinking so heavily about?" he added a second question. The rain really had him bored out of his mind with nothing to do. He wanted to go to sleep but the thunder was too loud. And even if he had some way to block out the sound, the flashes of lightning would wake him.

If he wanted to go to sleep, he needed to both deafen his ears and blind his eyes. The only solution that he could think of was to wrap a piece of cloth around his face but then he wouldn't be able to breathe and it would also be too stuffy.

Kies snapped out of his trance and looked at Falte and then at the wooden carving in his hand. "That looks like something that is important to you," the demon noted. "Or maybe you just saw that when you were out buying food and brought it because it looked interesting. Whatever the case, there has to be some story behind it right? Seeing that we have nothing else to do, let's hear it."

Falte needed something to entertain him right now or else he might just lose his mind. He might be an assassin, but he was never the patient type. How he worked as an assassin was to kill everyone that sees him regardless of how much noise he makes. As long as there is no one left alive to say that they met you, it could be considered as a job done correctly.

"I don't really remember where I got this from," Kies admitted. "I think someone gave it to me." He explained to the demon how his memories were fading rapidly and he could scarcely think back to what happened just a few days ago.

"Your memory problem... That's the first time I heard someone suffering from one as bad as this," Falte said in a dull voice. He didn't sound like he was particularly concerned about what Kies was going through but still asked him about it. "Did you injure yourself or something and that's why you're forgetting things?"

"No." Whenever Kies receives an injury, it heals right up in seconds. It had nothing to do with his memory. Unless... It wasn't his body that was injured but his core. But if that was the case, wouldn't he be suffering from the same thing that killed Tonahl? And if that was also the case, didn't that explain the reason why he wasn't getting much stronger despite how much he trains?
