The enemy spotted Kies not too soon after he spotted them. It isn't that hard to spot someone when they were sitting on top of a building. Some of them pointed at Kies and informed the rest of his location. After they were all aware of where he was, the group advanced with caution towards him.
'Maybe I should have hidden and waited for them.' Kies had the opportunity to set up an ambush after he spotted where they were coming from. He had enough time to slide down and hide before they spotted him. Oh well, it was too late for that.
Kies slid down the roof and landed on the ground next to the house. The enemy was still minutes away from him and he had some time to plan out something before they arrived. Kies waited for them to come to him but after some time passed, they still were nowhere to be seen. Kies was confused and was about to hop back on top of the roof to see what they were doing but suddenly hear a defeating roar.
Kies looked up and saw a giant head above the roofs of the houses. How did they manage to summon something like that? It was an avatar of light, similar to the one that Reepmn could summon. It had the face of an animal with long ears and a big snout. The avatar looked Kies' way and opened its mouth.
Kies didn't need any warning to know that he needed to get out of the way of whatever it was that was coming. Kies jumped to the side and a beam of light burned straight through all the houses in its way and almost hit Kies. He felt the beam hit the side of his cloak and burn part of it off. The cloak that survived even a dragon's fire couldn't take a hit from that.
What the h*ll was that thing? He should have been watching the enemy and see what they were doing. Since he didn't pay attention to them, he had basically let them summon that avatar of light.
Kies extinguished the flames that were crawling up his sleeve and looked back at the avatar. Its eyes were still fixated on him and were staring at him. Kies didn't know what it was going to do next and started running. The last thing he needed to be was standing still. He needed to be constantly on the move to make it harder for that thing to hit him.
Kies continued to keep an eye on the avatar while he ran and saw that it was starting to do something with its hands. It raised its arms and a large orb of light appeared in its hands. It then threw it down at him.
Kies sped up his pace when he saw the attack flying towards him and ran as fast as he could. D*mn it, he should've cast Wind' Blessing to enhance his speed before he started running. He had been too worried about it attacking him again and didn't take time to cast it before running. The sphere of light landed right behind him and Kies turned around and crossed his arms, bracing himself for the explosion, but surprisingly nothing happened. The sphere of light just sank into the ground and disappeared.
"Huh..." That was lucky. He guessed the attack wasn't supposed to explode or something went wrong at their end. Either way, Kies used this opportunity to cast Wind's Blessing as there was a small window of time in between the avatar's attacks.
Kies took off after he finished chanting his spell and at the same time, the avatar was getting ready for its third attack. But this time, Kies was ready. He watched as the light giant stretched out his left arm at him. Expecting another laser beam attack, Kies continued running straight, making sure to pass as many houses as he could to get out of its vision temporarily. As he expected, another beam of light shot out from his hand and destroyed all the houses in the way. But unlike the other beam which only lasted a few seconds, this one continued to shoot out of its hand and it followed Kies as he ran.
The avatar's arm speed was far too slow to keep up with Kies' running speed and he very quickly outran the laser beam. Kies stopped for a moment and glanced back at the damage that the light giant caused and saw that almost everything behind him was destroyed. Yeah, he really can't afford to get hit by any one of its attacks or he was dead.
Isn't something like this supposed to be a trump card? The church just summoned it straight off the bat like it was nothing. Speaking of which, where was its caster or casters? Kies had been slowly running closer and closer to the avatar but the white-robed people were nowhere to be seen. Kies didn't know where they went but he didn't have a good feeling about it. But he didn't really have a good feeling around anything. Whenever anything happens, he always assumes the worst.
But back to the problem, where were the mages? Were they inside the avatar and were controlling it? That was one possibility. If so, then he had nothing to worry about while waiting for the demons to find the fragment. He could continue running circles around the avatar infinitely if he needed to. Or maybe not. He had until his magic ran out and he couldn't cast Wind's Blessing anymore. But he had a long time to go before that happened.
But Kies had to consider the other possibilities of where the mages might be. If they weren't inside the avatar and were outside here with him, then he needed to be careful. As much as he didn't want to deal with both the avatar and the mages at the same time, he needed to be ready in case it happens.
