Chapter 78

He walked the short distance to his bedroom door, raised his hand to knock, and hesitated. Was she still sleeping? Did she need more time to adjust to her new situation?

Enough questions. Time to act.

He knocked.

No one answered. Disappointment snaked its way into his heart. She was probably still sleeping. From what he'd seen at the creek, she could use some rest, but Mrs. Runnunger said there wasn't a thing wrong with her. She'd been asleep for nearly 16 hours. She should be awake by now.

Another moment passed before be pressed down the latch and pushed the door open.

When he stepped inside, his gut jumped into his chest.

She was awake alright, wide awake and standing bold and breathtakingly beautiful in the middle of his bedroom.

He tried to speak, but the words were lodged in his throat somewhere between the rising ball of desire and the questions he wanted to ask.
