They'd travelled another forty-five minutes through stark but gorgeous, untouched terrain before she gave the conversation another try.

"Is your real name, Cinco?" Innocuous, pleasant question.

"Yes."

His answer was quick, simple, and infuriating. "Really?"

Please give me something to work with.

He quirked his eyebrow, whether in annoyance or confusion, Mari wasn't sure.

"Yes, my real name is Cinco," he replied.

That was somewhat better but in no way a slam dunk.

"Is there a story behind it?" At this point, her stubborn inner investigator really truly wanted to know more about the man. The tension rolling from him, his terse, almost angry answers, and the way he avoided looking at her told her he was hiding something, and it had everything to do with her.

What was it about her that had this man on edge?
