Chapter 64

Friday, December 14th

Katelina called two days later. "They transferred the tickets for me and they're good for tonight's show, if you want to go?"

Patrick heard the intake of breath, as if his answer really mattered.

"Sure. Let me put some clothes on."

"Great. I'll pick you up in front of your building?"

Patrick agreed, then scurried into the shower. His hair was shaggy and needed cut, but there wasn't time. He'd have to hit his mom up again on Saturday. The clippers she'd bought years ago from a TV infomercial had more than made their money back.

He dressed, then hurried down the stairs. Soft snowflakes drifted around him, and he leaned out and caught one on his tongue. Just like when we were kids. Only now his wish had changed.

He hurried toward the sound of a car, but stopped when he realized it was Michael. The vehicle pulled over, and the window went down.

"Hey! Pat! How'd you know I was coming?"

"I didn't." He hesitated then drew closer. "What do you want?"
