He found his duffel bag and mentally composed the note to leave for her. He didn't want to say too much, but he needed to say something so she didn't feel abandoned. While he chewed over the words, he packed a change of clothes, not for himself, but for Arowenia. She'd need something to wear besides the filthy peach dress. He was sorry he didn't have any girls' clothes, but he had some old stuff that was too small for him. The bonus was that it was clean.

He gathered a hairbrush and some basic bath items, and was stuffing them into the bag when the knock came. He'd been in the middle of a beautifully imagined third paragraph but, at the sound, the shreds of thought disappeared. Furious, he stalked to the door to see who the hell was bothering him at four in the morning.
