Chapter 54

It was very quiet, as if the light snow had placed a muffled blanket across the world. He frowned and checked the time on his cell phone. It was eight thirty now.

He called Adam. The phone rang and then finally went to voicemail. "Call dad," he said simply. But now a worried crease had formed between his eyes. He called Stella. Her phone continued to ring as well.

That wasn‘t right. He knew that her phone was set so that she could use it while driving. She didn‘t have to dig for it through her bags or purse. He called again but hung up as soon as it once again offered him the opportunity to leave a message.

He dashed back into the house and quickly pulled on his boots. He then grabbed his coat from the hook by the door. He ran to his truck but the moment his feet landed on the cement he slid, nearly landing on his ass.

His face turned white. Ice.
