Chapter 40

MAD STAGGERED OUTSIDE the Communications Station, wishing she could catch a glimpse of the battle raging overhead. The wind still whistled against her ears and snow still fell, but many of the tanks in the valleys were still flaming and many of the bodies were still bleeding, dotting the landscape with small pools of orange and red.

Lyle approached her, his eyes tired, distant, and haunted, as she was sure hers were. Gil, Blair, Pops, Stache, and Walker lay dead along with a row of other casualties outside the station, arms folded across their chests.

"Sir," said Lyle. "It's Cobb. He wants to see you."

"Take me to him."

"Yes, sir."

Lyle led Mad to a small crowd of her squad.

"Make way," said Lyle, and her squad parted to reveal Taps lying on the ground, a bloody bandage tightly wrapped around his stomach.

A soldier named Derick stood beside Taps, frowning, obviously fighting the urge to cry. "I'm sorry," he said. "There's nothing I can do. This man is a hero."
