Chapter 173

Dalton and Elyse, the burden was Austin's responsibility now, relaxed on deck.

"It's like waiting for the jury to reconvene after your final arguments, and you've given a big case to them." Elyse got up from her chair and began pacing.

"It sure is," Dalton replied, his thoughts elsewhere as he rubbed his bruised shoulder around where the stitches began. The bruise reminded him of who shot him and what would become of that person if he were to press charges. As far as he knew, it hadn't even been reported to the police because they hadn't investigated it. They hadn't sequestered him and asked him a hundred questions over and over until he got it right. He knew how the system worked. Had been working it a long time and knew the ins and outs.

"Okay, what can we do to help?" Elyse asked.

Dalton's phone rang. He looked at the caller ID.

"It's Austin." He answered. "Hey, Austin."

"You may or may not like this. I'm not sure."

"What is it, Austin? Spill it!"
