Chapter 72: Monster, Part 3

We walked outside into the back courtyard and everyone cheered. Then, Aiden climbed behind the wheel of the covered truck and finished mowing down the fence. We worked into the night, pulling down the fence, wanting to rid the school of any reminder of the war and the insurgents. As the sun set on the day, the school was beginning to take shape again. It seemed like a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but it was our little piece of freedom. It was no longer a concentration camp; it was our school.

"You kids have done enough," an older man in his late thirties said, shaking Derek's hand. "We'll take over from here."

"Are you sure you can handle it?" Trevor asked with a sly smile, overhearing the conversation.
