When he hangs up, his shoulders are tense and his eyes angry. He climbs out the car and leads me up the steps to my building, leaving everything in the car.
"You're staying at mine tonight," he says. It's not a discussion, his tone makes that clear. "As soon as the police have been, we're going home."
The apartment shows no sign that anyone has tried to gain access to, but I still feel ill at ease as we wait. Jarrod is impatient which only makes me feel more anxious. He's restless. His car keys are still in his hand and I know that if he wasn't the only person with me right now, he'd have followed after Rick.
When the police arrive, they ask me a few questions and look around. I tell them exactly what I saw. I tell them that I might be overreacting. I didn't see his license plate. It's completely possible that it was someone else altogether.
Kelly offers me a cup of tea and rests her hand on my shoulder.
"It's better to be safe than sorry."
