Chapter 300: Easter

For the majority of the weekend, I stay out of Tallulah's way. The Stones are pretty strict so it's not like we're sharing a bedroom and their house is sort of on the large side, so we don't have to see much of each other if we don't want to.

It's not that I want to keep my distance. I don't. It's just that I'm convinced that if I spend time with her, she'll dump my arse quicker than a hot potato. When I get a call from the police that Roderick has been re-released on bail, I don't want to tell her. I don't want anyone to tell her. She's enjoying herself with her friends, I don't want him to ruin it, but I can't lie to her.

I pull her to one side although she's not exactly happy about it.

"What do you want, Jarrod?" Her tone is clipped, like she's trying her hardest to sound detached.

"I got a phone call from the police."

Her eyes dart to mine. She's trying so hard to distance herself from me. It's hurting me. Surely, it's hurting her too.

"What did they say?"
