He couldn't hear his father's end of the conversation, but he could certainly hear his uncle's.

"Have you any idea what you have done, you old fool? There has practically been a diplomatic incident. You can't carry on like this in this day and age. The boy is an important scientist. We have had no less than five communications from the British government expressing concern at his disappearance and demanding to know his whereabouts, not to mention three communications from the Medical Research Council. And they are blaming me."

Kim listened, hardly able to believe his ears. There was the faintest murmur from his father, but even though he strained to hear, he could not catch what he said.
