As they walked back to the apartments, he took her by the hand. "What is it?"he asked.
"Oh, I don't know,"she looked down miserably at her feet. "I can't help wondering whether you only found me attractive because I'm ... I was ... fat."
Cornelius thought about this for a moment. "I don't think so,"he said slowly. "I noticed you before I found the bag."But a part of him had a nagging doubt. He couldn't remember whether he had thought she was attractive before he found the bag. Maybe the bag found her attractive.
"So I wasn't just an experiment?"
"Good God no,"said Cornelius, shocked.
"And what about these other women?"
"What other women?"he asked, perplexed.
"The ones you're going to offer the treatment to."Suddenly Laura burst into tears. "I'm sorry,"she said, turning her head away.
Cornelius grabbed her by the chin and turned her back to face him. "I'm not in the least bit interested in other women,"he said. "This would be business."
