Chapter 29: Joe

On Monday, Joe left the house early. As he drove to work, he hoped that he would see Elizabeth's headlights behind him, but he knew his early start that morning would put him in the city well ahead of her. When he got to work, he headed straight to the darkroom. He worked there for some time, preparing for his week ahead and taking stock of his supplies. When he finally walked out of the darkroom, he found his editor near his desk. He walked over toward him.

"Morning, boss," Joe said.

His editor turned around, looking at Joe as he limped past him to his desk. Joe eased into his chair.

"What the hell happened to you?" Mike asked.

Joe grimaced as a twinge of pain ran through his back. "Ah, it was nothing. I just fell." Joe didn't elaborate any further; he just looked to the paperwork in his editor's hand. "That mine?"

His editor handed over his assignment sheets. "Yes, these are yours. It's a pretty slow week looks like."
