Chapter 37: Joe

As Joe looked at Andy in the picture, he seemed to, at least for a moment, understand exactly what he'd meant about feeling like he mattered during the war. Joe walked back over to the folder and pulled some more of the pictures out. The next photo showed a burned-out B-29 on the runway. He looked to the white cloth he had thrown on the desk. He walked over to it, picked it up and unfolded it. When he held it up, it was what was left of a large Japanese flag. Joe tossed the flag back to the counter and then looked at the picture. He could see the flag still clinging to the wing.

The plane had gone on a bombing run and hit a Japanese ship. They had gone in so low that they couldn't miss, but they also grazed the mast of the ship. They hit right where their right-wing attached to the plane's fuselage, which was the strongest point of the aircraft, but going in so low took its toll on the plane and the crew. The plane had made it back to the runway, but just barely.
