Chapter 23

"I won't be able to see you again for a long time," Anko said to Benjamin, as they met by the Jizo statues in the meadow. Anko hated sneaking out, but this might be her last chance to see Benjamin, and she didn't want to leave without at least saying goodbye.

"Why not?" Benjamin said, breathless from running up the hill. He clutched Anko's message in his hand. She took it from him as he asked, "What happened?"

"We are leaving with the household right now," Anko said. "I've only got a few minutes. Gengoro is coming. He'll be here shortly. By tomorrow, our scouts tell us."

"Coming?" Benjamin asked. "What do you mean?"

"Coming with his army," Anko said impatiently. "Didn't you hear what the monk said when we met here before? Haven't you been watching? Haven't you been listening? Soldiers training, messengers coming and going Father's sent for troops from all over the area to help our household troops. We need a rout."
