Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). That second meeting with the woman who'd crossed my path the autumn before got me thinking about the first. As I sifted through my impressions of Lys Mall I thought back to my experience of the evening just after. You remember the night on which I had been so spellbound by the strange Neoclassical building with the sphinxes on Niagara Street in Buffalo. Resolution there was a bit clearer.


I'd since verified that the building was a former Masonic hall, but the details about its past were unusually hard to come by. It was as if the owners had been resistant to the inquiries of the preservationists and historical societies, possibly for a long time.
