Mason Winfield

Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). A charcoal-grey Humvee tears down the highway through a flat, scrubby desert landscape under a brilliant sky. Two big, athletic-looking young men lounge in the back seat. They are dressed casually and functionally, in jeans, fatigues, and warmups. They give the instant impression of either pro football players out sightseeing or undercover cops.


A big, short-haired black man is driving. The lean, middle-sized man beside him is Jason Jonas, in a form-fitting navy Adidas soccer warmup suit. He pops a wire from his iPod into the player before him, and 1950s-style piano jazz starts to fill the vehicle.


"That's Art Tatum," says Jonas. "He was blind. Still one of the greats of jazz piano."
