Chapter 40: An Arabesque of Motley, Part 40

REFLECTION of WARD COURIER

June, 2009

The Golden Age Greeks gave us a lot of our categories. They had four words for love.

"Storge" wasn't used much in the old texts, and some people think aspects of two of the other three words cover it. Storge is a nurturing, supportive kind of a love that some translate into English as "family-" or "instinctual love" and includes even beloved animal-friends. As I read it, the PETA societies are full of inspiration by storge.

"Agape" is another unselfish love, but the most abstract of the bunch. It's a love for things you might not even be able to touch, like distant victims or the gods of your society. Charity and a general good will for humankind are examples of agape. This is the term that I think could encompass most aspects of the above-mentioned storge.
