Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). The jeep roars down a dim dirt road. The passenger, the mustached man who apparently directed the attack at the restaurant, takes out a cell phone and speaks into it in Spanish. A quarter mile down the road, he pockets the phone and addresses the driver with a gloating question. He repeats it. He repeats it again. The driver's right hand goes inside his jacket.


"No speako Scumbag," says the driver under the mask in the voice of Jason Jonas. His right hand slashes out backhandedly, striking his passenger sideways across the face with his collapsible baton.
