Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). It should not surprise you that my thoughts often returned to Lys and her paradoxical personality.


Lys had a couple personae, and she seemed to be able to snap from one to the other easily and completely. When we had done our thing together before that scene at the yoga studio - the big reveal - she had seemed a uniquely indignant former Valley girl. I had no suspicions that I was the one being studied. All those random-but-prearranged meetings and hard-to-get gestures would have been the perfect cover. I would have been too distracted by all the maddening behavior to have a clue about the big picture. I would have thought I was pursuing her. The whole scenario took my breath away.
