Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). The man walked back into the deep shadow on the east side of the Chapel as if to the darkness of the empty Inn. And after that, I don't remember much. All I know is that a weight had been lifted.


If you are asking for an interpretation of these events, I'm happy to speculate. My friend's return as an apparition, the activation of the face upon the Chapel, and the intervention of the mysterious swordsman must have been the final strokes of the protection my friend had obtained for me. But I also wonder if the nocturnal cavalier could represent some new force acting on interests of its own. I think that face on the Chapel had that big creature already handled.
