NARRATIVE of WARD COURIER, Continued
January, 2011
RUSKIN, NY
I remember a lot of laughs from that evening, but one episode stands out. Early in the evening I had noticed that Mr. California was quick on his mental feet and had an offbeat sense of humor. I remember one of his lines that attested to it. It came at about 12:30.
The Tom's usual late-night suspects were in, including Ruskin's studly town justice - by then the town's mayor - with one of his best high school buddies. I've referred to him before. He's a good athlete, a strong character, and a good businessman, but he is nothing if not one of the guys. I think this has helped him in life. He is still in the town in which he went to high school, and he will probably be hanging out with these guys for another fifty years. He's known as a bit of a conquistador with the ladies, too, and when he's in his cups he gets loose.
