Author, teacher, storyteller, and supernatural historian Mason Winfield studied English and Classics at Denison University, earned a master’s degree in British literature at Boston College, and studied poetry and fiction at SUNY Buffalo with professor emeritus and MacArthur grant recipient Irving Feldman. He has written or edited fourteen books, including the regional sensation “Shadows of the Western Door” (1997) and “Iroquois Supernatural,” co-authored with Michael Bastine, on the traditions of the Six Longhouse Nations (Inner Traditions International/Bear & Company, 2011). I called Rick Reynard as I was driving home from the meeting you have just read about. I was both happy and surprised that we could meet the following night at our usual spot, the Italian-American place in Ruskin village. I felt like I had to get the word out on the reservations. I was also hoping Rick would tell me more of what he knew about things than Ted Bennett usually did. I wasn't sure he would. The Longhouse elders believe that some of the secrets they keep are too powerful to let out irresponsibly. If a line of questioning overlaps one of the protected areas, Rick clams up.


"Rick," I started when the preliminaries were over. "I just had a heavy conference with an FBI man over some of the developments I've been talking over with you. This one seemed to be seriously questioning things."
