A beam of light from the lot cast a glint on a still sprinkler above them. "He cut off the water," said The Brother, looking to it. He clenched a hand as though feeling the beat of his own heart and reflected as though undergoing a debate. "So be it," he said when his fury allowed him to speak. "So be it. Then he must lose his deepest desire."

He turned like a general rising from the war-table after settling on a battle plan. "There will be a consequence to this, but no one must know till the time is near." He shook his curled hand into his own core again. "And he must lose his deepest desire."
