"We never found the jaw or the skull," said Bennett. "Our agent did some pretty hard questioning." I smiled again, trying to hide what I knew. 'Hard.' That was one word for it.

"We think the pothunters tried to pull one over on whoever they sold the Skull to. They picked the wrong people to mess with. The really wrong people."

"That it for the Skulls?" I said.

"An archeological team was on a dig near an overgrown city in southeastern Mexico," he said. "Spring and Summer 2009. They said they found a Crystal Skull. Detachable jaw, everything. In authentic circumstances. Looked like the real thing. They were waiting to publish their findings. It was going to be six months before the world knew. I think they said the skull they had was a different type of quartz crystal from the Mitchell-Hedges skull. It was sort of a yellow-amber."

I nodded inwardly. The Jaguar Skull. One of them, anyway.
