Chapter 60: Paradiso

"If she was dead her body would still be here. Wouldn’t it, Joey?” I asked.

“I don't know Lukas, maybe she got up and walked off, you know like Jesus?”

“Dead people just don't get up and walk off. Get real! She’s got to be alive and she's out there somewhere!” I exclaimed.

“Face it, Lukas, Father Paolo wouldn't have killed himself, if he knew she wasn't dead! Think about it! You read the letter. He felt responsible.”

“I’m not buying it.” I said. “I'm going to search the cornfield and vines. You can come with me or stay here!"

Kerry reappeared and informed us the local police were on their way. He explained to them, who he was and that we weren’t suspects. We were free to leave. There was nothing more we could do. I threw the car keys to Kerry.

“I’m staying! I’m not leaving until I find out what happened to her!”

“Don’t be an idiot, she’s not here. If we leave now, I’m not coming back. How do you plan on getting back?”
