Chapter 8: Weapon or Piece

AUSPICIOUS

Victoria opens her bedside drawer to drop them in, but inside she sees a sight so shocking, it erases all trails of sleepiness in her mind. It keeps her at wake and she fights the urge of a sly grin creeping up to play on her lips sloppily, she drops the bobby pins inside, hitting against the cold blade shining with her reflection as if attempting to mock her. A knife in her drawer - that's what it was. But ultimately Victoria shuts it back close, heads to bed and tries her best to drift off to her mind theater she'd like to call 'dreams' hoping things would turn for the better toward the next day.

Soon as hours go by, the sun shone brightly, soft glows of light peaking in through the curtains as they prance around a dimly lit room making its way to the closed eyes of a sleeping guest, bloodied blankets, and a peaceful smile spread across their lips. It was a new day. Birds chirping sweetly outside and the scene of this mansion sitting quietly atop this lonely island only made it seem like it belonged in an old graceful painting.

It's funny thinking about how the place had looked like it had come straight out of a fairy tale, so innocuous and wholesome, yet the minds it currently housed were that of what just might be the world's greatest set of criminals, so complex and so sharp, these were a group of murderers who had never been caught nor questioned in the slightest bit by society, and yet here they were dead or alive, all in one house rounded like horses in a barn, trapped and nowhere to go, all led by one great plan.

In another room, Victoria yawns, stretching her arms out as she slowly sits up on her bed. Sleepy eyes making its way unto her own hands as she smiles down at them, "I wonder what mystery this place has got cooked up this time." she says, voice still a little rough and her throat - sore as a sign of how she had obviously just awaken.

She made her way to the bathroom, washed her hands, then her face, and she started to freshen up a bit, readying herself for a nice morning stroll around the mansion again in hopes she could avoid any casualty this time and perhaps even find a clue about the extra person hiding around the outskirts of the island in broad daylight. "If there really is an extra person with us, then they've got to have a place to hide. We're on a small island, if I'm careful enough I might be able to figure where their hideout is." Victoria had thought to herself.

She had dressed herself up in a nice flowy black dress that ends just above her knee, cute and soft ruffles just barely covering the corners of her shoulders and pretty lace gracing the hem of her skirt. She looked quite elegant but in a cute and casual manner. Yes, the irony her outfit held, but she ought to think it was pretty and so she had gone on to tie her hair in a sloppy bun, bobby pins out of the drawer and unto her head, and knife still glimmering menacingly inside, staring right back at her as if so knowingly of her sins.

Victoria had caught eye of the piece. "weapon or piece. Take your pick, but never call it a knife." Victoria had remembered those words from a movie she had seen in the past, but she shrugs the thought off and closes the drawer, reaching out for her purse instead. It was slightly heavier than it would've normally been, so she takes a peek to look at what was inside, hoping that all her belongings had stayed the same. She leans down towards her purse that was now sitting on her lap and upon closer inspection, she sees something odd - something she is sure she has never owned before.

Her eyes grow wide at the sight and her hands begin to shake uncontrollably. "Why is this here?" Victoria let's out in a shaky breath. She whips her head side to side so violently you'd fear she was going to snap her neck as she checked around her room for anyone else to see. There was no one inside. Not a single soul, and the air surrounding her just happened to be so quiet you could even hear a pin drop.

Victoria was certain she was alone, and furthermore that she had never brought anything like this on the island, so why was it there? Where did it come from? She decided to reach in to her bag and picked up the thing, feeling its weight gently transferring itself to Victoria's fingers as they carefully brush the insides of her purse. She pulls it out for closer examination and the longer she holds it, the more certain her thoughts become. She was holding a gun.

Someone had placed a gun in her purse last night - that much she was at least sure of. She doesn't know much about guns - just that you cock it, pull the trigger, and bang it goes - so there was no doubt it wasn't hers, but who would have done such act? - Who could have done such act? - She always carries her purse with her or rather checks it every day, and just this morning, a gun had somehow been born inside of it as if by magic!

Whoever did this had access to her room last night as she slept, whether it was through the window or by picking the lock of her door - Victoria was more than convinced someone had gotten in, but why didn't the intruder just kill her? Why did that person have to leave a weapon inside of her bag that she could use? Perhaps they thought she could just go kill herself in that matter, perhaps they took pity in her state, but if they were to take pity, shouldn't they have taken pity on Samantha instead? It was as if the killer was mocking her and this idea only infuriated Victoria.

Victoria had thought for countless minutes until she had decided on an ultimatum: She'll shrug it off. The experience is already weird enough and the island has proven itself to be more than dangerous, lurking in the deepest and darkest depths of the cold unknowing silence of the night. Victoria gauges herself to put the weapon back in her purse and carry it with her instead for self-defense purposes as she carries on her initial plan of taking a stroll around the mansion, only this time she had a sudden surge of courage she had never even known she had before.
