MARGAUX
I stared at Kevin, sending a smirk his way as I threw the knife that I had caught which had almost grazed him, at one of the people in black. The knife hit him right in the chest, instantly making him fall ungraciously on the floor, lifeless.
Countering my smirk, I watched Kevin make his move, knocking one of Takahashi's men in three punches.
"Not bad," I said, turning around right after, blocking an attack from the yakuza.
I was well aware that we were outnumbered. I could also guarantee that more will keep coming. Yet, out of the corner of my eye, I could see that despite the number, Kevin and his crew seemed to have picked up what was going on and had joined in the battle which I had, unintentionally, brought over.
Part of me felt guilty. The chaos inside Rhythm should not have happened. If I was not here. I could have saved Kevin and his men some trouble brewed by the Japanese yakuza. However, it was too late by then. I can't get these annoying yakuza's off of my back.
Letting out a disgusted sound, I skillfully dodged and counter-attacked another one of Takahashi's men, plunging my blade on his chest, scrunching my face at the sight of his contorted expression while he clutched helplessly at his gushing wound. .
The dance with Takahashi's men went on, as more came every time we made progress in reducing their numbers. It somehow started to feel dragging.
"Who on earth did you pissed off so bad, Rose? This seems never-ending," I heard Kevin from a few distances. Weirdly enough, his statement almost made me laugh. But, I was aware that if I laughed out loud while in the middle of a fight, he might think that I was either mocking him or was not taking this fight seriously.
Neither of those was favorable given that Kevin and his crew were involved. He was right to remind me that lives are at stake and I did not want him to assume that I had no care whether they die or not because I do.
I can't afford to watch anyone else die, especially those who had done nothing to deserve such an unfortunate fate.
In an instant, Mikee's face flashed before my eyes. He had that look of understanding that told me he was ready to make a sacrifice and that it was okay.
Feeling a sharp pain between my shoulder blades brought me back to the present. The brief memory of Mikee's last moments had thrown me off my momentum. Garnering enough strength, I pushed my attacker away, kicking him where it hurt the most and had pulled off the Wakizashi sword, instantly recognizing it. It was a small sword, mostly an accompaniment with the Katana.
My father had fancied the Japanese types of swords and wanted to learn about it. Interestingly enough, I too had wanted to learn more about the swords. Thus, my recognition of it.
I fixated my gaze on my opponent, however, before I could counter his attack, I sensed another attack coming from behind me.
Torn, I was trying to contemplate whom to take down first when in an instant, I heard a groan coming from behind. I quickly glanced and found Kevin, a smirk on his face as he caught my gaze, one foot was stepping over the chest of Takashi's disciple who was only moments ago was too keen on slamming into me.
"Eye on the prize, Rose," he stated and I watched him surge forward, knocking my opponent off of his feet with a few quick punches here and there.
When he was done, he once again looked at me, the smirk never leaving his lips. It was then that I realized, our surroundings had become quiet.
"Bloody hell," Nico exclaimed, breaking the building silence as I found that Takahashi's men had been taken care of and some of Kevin's crew seemed to be wounded, a few of them helping those that had gotten one or two minor injuries to get to their feet.
Nico was wiping blood off of his hands as he came towards me and Kevin.
"Now, Rose," Kevin remarked, ignoring his friend and was looking at me right in the eye.
"I think I have earned the right to know who you really are," I knew that he had a point. After what had transpired and with the mess that Takahashi's men had insinuated, I owe Kevin some parts of the truth.
However, before I could open my mouth, Mary put a hand on my shoulder.
"Rose already told you about her identity. In fact, she already told you too much," I looked at Kevin while giving Mary's hand a gentle squeeze as a way of saying thank you for saving me from having to answer the mafia boss who seemed to be so eager to know about who I really am.
Though, I could really understand why Kevin was being that way. He was the boss. His crew was looking and relying on him. As a leader, he was their exemplar and trusted him with everything that they have and in turn, Kevin wanted to hold responsibility for their lives. He made it his duty to make sure that his crew will not die for anything not even worth it.
Joining the mafia was never an easy feat. If it was, then everybody should already be doing it, everybody should have become mafias and there will be no fear of getting caught.
"My identity is as unimportant as Rose's. Besides, you have seen first hand the danger we are really in. Shouldn't that be enough?"
Mary's question seemed to hang heavily in the air as Kevin seemed to be assessing both me and Mary and what Mary had just stated.
If it had been me, I would have said no. I love Mary but I would beg to disagree with what she had just said. I would demand an explanation which is exactly why I had wanted to at least make Kevin understand what happened just now.
A partial truth is still the truth. Plus, I wasn't about to announce to them that I am Margaux Cortez, the heir to the Golden Island. No one is ready to hear that truth yet. I was not ready to reveal my identity at this early stage of negotiating.
At some point, I knew that I should. We will, after all, be facing Takahashi when the time was already right. It was better that the truth came from me instead of them having to hear it through someone else.
"What happened just now does not explain why you were being chased in the first place. So, no, I don't think that it's enough,"
Sighing, I looked at Mary and smiled faintly.
"Trust me," I mouthed, reassuring her that I got this. She nodded, warily eyeing both Kevin and Nico.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to face Kevin.
"If I tell you who I am, will you finally accept your defeat and stop demanding for a rematch?" I watched Kevin's mouth slowly twitch into somewhere between frowning and smirking.
"Ah, you really drive a hard bargain, Rose. I have a lot of things in the line if I do as you say, however, you, you seem to have little to lose,"
I have no idea how to react in regards to what he had just said.
"If I tell you who I am, Kevin, I will be putting everything in the line."
