Going Bowling

The mermaid kept her trident close at hand while I tended to her wounds. Life Gift wasn't a cure all and she was still bleeding internally. All I could do was direct the healing and hope for the best. She kept a hand on her midriff and clutched her trident. When her health pool stopped dipping, I hoped she'd live.

"Why did you heal me?" She asked.

"Why did you save me back there?" I asked in return.

She looked away. "I shouldn't have, surface dwellers are vile creatures who take what little we have." She said.

"You're right, but there were no other options. I didn't strike first. We didn't have to come to blows." I said.

She snorted. "It always comes to blows we tried to be nice and trade, but violence is the only language surface dwellers know. Now my sisters are dead, and the sharks will take more territory from us." She said.
