Adelyn lies in bed tossing and turning until 'Ding' another restless night full of nightmares. The phones bright light emanating in the dark illuminating her small apartment. She stretches her arm toward it noticing the rather cool air caressing her backside. Unlocking her phone feeling blinded by its intense light in the pitch of black surrounding her. Slowly with one eye closed and the other straining to adjust she opens her messages, it's Margret:
"Hey, come over for dinner
tonight Suzanne has big news!"
"Alright I'll be there at 7?"
"That's perfect!"
"We are having chicken and broccoli,
bring whatever you like."
"Will do."
Sighing loudly "How long am I going to lie to them?" she shifts in her bed "not like they would understand why I'm doing this" she swipes over to her email "ATTENTION REQUIRED" sighing again she ignores it for now. "The lawsuit against me has been settled, I'm on a fixed income from here on out. I should be glad Margret decided not to sue me, that might change once she finds out who I really am. I really don't want to cause more pain in their life, I'm starting to really like them."
"I have a client that would like to go over some details for their order do you have a moment?" Mrs. Len requested as she passed Adelyn's desk on the way to her own.
"On it" Adelyn strolled over to the client waiting area pausing when she noticed a familiar face "Oh god, it's HER." she thought about retreating and making an excuse about being far too busy to handle clients today, as she was about to turn around "Hey stranger" she turned back and smiled "Oh hey....you" she fumbled through the paperwork she had looking for the name ....Mary Brighton? "That can't be right" she thought. The Butch woman smiled impishly and said, "It's short for Marilyn."
"I knew that" she pulled out the order request and sat down at a table to work on whatever she wanted for it. Mary sat across from her crossing her legs so that her foot is against Adelyn's thigh. Adelyn clears her throat "ahem so uh there was something you needed to talk to me about?"
"Why didn't you call me?" her inquiry rather sudden.
"Uh I ... I meant about the order you placed." she holds up the papers.
"You can't tell me you didn't enjoy yourself." her face presented a shit eating grin.
"I'll tell you later when I'm not at work!" she snapped at her.
"Rawr I like em feisty, but ok I give, boss" Mary concedes "So what we are looking for is five shirts with the words dirty thirty's on the front but each shirt has a unique image on the back to represent each person but I don't know what would be a good image to use."
"Have you thought about using animals, or astrological signs, or sports?"
"That's a good idea boss" using the word boss to denote Adelyn's demanding nature she showed earlier.
"Um please don't call me that" exacerbated with the situation.
"Anything you say bwoss, you're the bwoss, bwoss" Mary teases in a butchered Boston accent.
Adelyn sighs heavily "So do you want me to choose a type or something for each person or are you capable of handling that on your own?"
"Good one boss, I got it" she bites her bottom lip with a smile as her eyes mentally undressing Adelyn. She gets up and walks out if the building seemingly cockier than before. Adelyn sulks back to her desk, mentally exhausted from that one interaction.
"What was that about?" Mrs. Len must have seen the interaction between them and felt the need to ask.
"Oh that.... just an old friend is all" hiding the truth, her eyes pleading to end the conversation there.
"Old friend? More like jaded lover, that conversation was hard not to hear." she let out a playful laugh "Your secret is safe with me" she does a zipping motion across her lips, locking and throwing away the key before returning to her desk with a big grin on her face.
Adelyn's shift is just about over so she begins to gather her things and finish off projects. On her way to the door the secretary snickers "Your girlfriend is still out there." pointing to the parking lot.
Embarrassed and irate her face turns bright red, walking outside Mary was indeed waiting for her. "Can I offer you a ride?" noticing Adelyn's lack of transportation.
"I'm fine, I take the bus" With the last word uttered it began to rain.
"How about now, boss" the smirk on Mary's face grew wider.
"Fine, but only because it's raining, and I have somewhere to be in a half hour." she breaks down and accepts the offer. The two pile into the two-door red Camaro and with a squeal of the tires they were out of sight.
"Now that we have a chance to talk" Mary bites her lip and reaches her hand over Adelyn's thigh. "I thought we could get to know each other a little better."
Adelyn pushes her hand from her thigh "uh listen what we shared together was.... um good... I think, I don't really remember. To be honest I was pretty hammered."
"I appreciate the honesty, so why not give it a try? Let me help you remember how much fun we had." her hand slips across Adelyn's thigh aiming for what's in between.
"It's not really a good time for me to, you know, get involved with someone." placing her hand on top of Mary's hand stopping it from wandering further. Silence filled the car for a time their hands still together, the contact must sooth her need for interaction.
"So, where you headed?" she stopped advancing, her voice turn dry.
"Uh well it's a dinner at a friend's house" she mentioned nervously.
"I meant what road are we looking for, but that would explain a lot." she removes her hand from its warm position leaving only cold behind.
"Oh sorry, here I put it in the GPS." she holds up her phone so it's easily accessible. "What do you mean by "that explains it"?"
"There's someone else, a girl you like more probably oblivious to your feelings. I get it.... bwoss." she threw a terrible Brooklyn accent on that last word just for fun sake. "But hey you got my number, so gimme a call if you get lonely." they arrive at the destination.
"Sure thing, and thanks for the ride." she steps out if the car, with a thundering roar that echoes throughout the neighborhood Mary was gone.
The porch light flicks on as Margret opens the door after hearing the commotion outside. "Hello Adelyn, come on in." she waves her over and inside the house.
"Oh, I forgot to bring something, I came over from work." beating herself up for forgetting.
"That's quite alright dear girl, Suzanne brought plenty and I had cooked too much anyways so please have your fill." walking through the foyer and to the dining room Adelyn commented "You have such a beautiful home."
"This is Sandra's home, she built it from the ground up you know." Margret beaming with pride for her incredibly talented daughter. Lukas and Suzanne were sitting at the table already chatting like with much vigor. Margret chimed in "This is Del she's a good friend of Sandy's"
"Oh yes we ran into you at the hospital" Suzanne spoke in a much more cheerful tone then when they had first met. "It's good to formally meet you Del, you know me, and this handsome fellow is Lukas."
"Nice to meet you Lukas" she shakes his hand and makes her way across the table to sit near everyone. The food is all laid out across the table like a feast for kings, a whole chicken was roasted and garnished delicately, next to it a green bean casserole, mash potatoes and a whole bowl of steaming broccoli. "This all looks delicious!"
"I would hope it is, I've been cooking for over forty-five years" Margret quips. "Now before anything else let's grab our plates while everything is still warm." Each person slices into a different dish trading off until everyone has gotten a bit of everything. Adelyn grabbed a healthy helping of the broccoli once everyone had gotten a stab at it. "Hmmm this is so scrumptious!" Adelyn exclaimed.
"I second that proclamation!" Lukas trying to match Adelyn's diction with his best king's knight voice he could muster inciting a chuckle from everyone. After a few minutes or so of clinking silverware and small talk Suzanne was ready to make her announcement "Ok everyone, I've gathered you all here today to tell you I'm ...I mean we are pregnant!"
"Congratulations! I'm honored to be included on such a momentous occasion."
"Come here honey give mama a hug" Margret wraps her arms around Suzanne rubbing her back "I am so proud of you baby."
"Do you have names picked out yet?" Adelyn excitedly questioned.
"We've been thinkin Sandy if it's a girl after her aunty Sandra, and if it's a boy then David because we like the sound of it."
"Those are great names" Adelyn smiled happy for them.
"Who's ready for dessert?" Margret called out from the kitchen after quickly clearing the leftovers off the table and storing them. She makes her way out with a chocolate crumb pie with an Oreo crust.
"I couldn't possibly.... maybe a little slice." Adelyn resisted for a moment but fell prey to the mouthwatering slice presented to her.
