Coming back from the brink of total brain death Sandra's subconsciousness manifests a false reality once again picking up where it left off, but suppressing the darkness. Somehow her subconscious has reached out projecting itself supernaturally. Her brush with death affecting more than just her mind, but also her soul. Time skips going unnoticed her world slowly collapsing in on itself. The only thing keeping her from crossing over is her connection with the one she loves.
Sandra awoke in her bed to a noise in the dim rays of the morning light as she rolled over she expected to find her lovers warm embrace but instead found nothing. Her head shot up in panic as her eyes were drawn to a familiar figure standing in the darkness. "Del, sweetie? What are you doing?" she called out with no reply as the figure rushed out of the room. All she heard was thudding and rustling from the other room so she decided to dress herself and find out what's going on. Sandra searched the dresser for undergarments realizing she was in dire need of clean clothing. With a sigh she settled for a pair of ratty old underwear she's had for years but have yet to throw away. Sandra's memory flashed with pained fragments of fear and sadness, shaking the feelings away she decided they must have fought after a drunken night at the bar and pushed the thought to the back of her mind. Hearing a loud bang of the front door shutting she felt panicked once more, trying to keep calm she collected herself and walked outside. She sure is determined isn't she" speaking under her breath for a moment before jumping into her vehicle to chase her down. Driving up beside the red haired beauty she called out "Get in silly, what are you doing?" her voice seemingly falling upon deaf ears "Del, if you are trying to walk to work you'll be late for sure" a hint of annoyance in her tone.
"I'm sorry but I don't know who...." the woman turned to finally look in her direction stopping mid sentence.
"Come now baby, get in the car and tell me what's going on" Sandra puts the happiest smile on she can muster.
"Sandy?" del questioned.
"Uh, yes hon?" her voice mimicking Del's inflections....
-------
The phone to Adelyn's ear she hears an electronic voice say" Please leave a message at the beep….beeeeep"
"Hey Mary, it's been a while so uh call me back..bye." Adelyn sets her phone down and plops into a chair "I should tell Margret before Sandy wakes up...right? Ugh Mary doesn't seem to answer my calls anymore.. what should I do?" she clicks on the TV and flips through the channels hoping to distract herself from her worries unsuccessfully. "Hey Margret, remember when I said I was nearby when Sandra was in her accident? Yeah it was actually me who hit her ....that would not go over so well." shifting in her seat within her dark house, not a single light except for the TV flashing bright with infomercials, she felt uncomfortable in every position. Finding an arrangement with one leg underneath her and the other strewn across a table she settled in to watch an old drama that aired only at night. Restless sleep sweeping over her she fell into a dream.
------
She peered around an unfamiliar bed to find a dark figure, only able to see the shape, a sexy curve dipped down along the body of a stranger sleeping soundlessly beside her. Adelyn began to speak but decided against it, instead she crept out of the bed and headed for the door when a creaking in the wood floors stopped her movements. The sleeping woman rustled and turned over, her hand searching for the warmth that was once there. When she didn't find it her eyes flickered open and fell upon Adelyn's statuesque figure caught leaving the room. "Del, sweety? What are you doing?" was all Adelyn heard as she rushed out of the bedroom door. The sun peaking from the blinds told her she was late for work and running around in her underwear. She quickly snatched up random articles of clothing and threw them on herself before running to the door. Adelyn's mind races "Did I go home with someone last night? What was I thinking?!?" she scolds herself mentally. The clothing was all too long for her, the sleeves folding over her hands and the pants kicking up under her shoes as she started down the street trying to get as far away as possible. "Where the heck am I?" she managed to walk three blocks as she looked for a bus stop before a car drove up beside her.
"Get in silly, what are you doing?" the voice was sweet and calming. Adelyn tried to ignore the woman, she didn't glance back even once as she continued walking two more blocks down the road. The car driving steadily beside her watches her in confusion "Del, if you are trying to walk to work you'll be late for sure."
Adelyn spins around "I'm sorry but I don't know who...." her sentence trails off when she notices the familiar face of Sandra in the driver seat smiling back at her.
"Come now baby, get in the car and tell me what's going on." her voice hides the slightest irritation. Adelyn stops walking and climbs into the car in disbelief "Sandy?" she questions.
"Uh, yes hon?" Sandra's reply was full of confusion and concern.
"How? Uh when? Wait why do you keep calling me those things?"
"What? Pet names? I thought you liked them, I can stop if it bothers you?"
"Well, um I don't mind them...just uh when did this all happen?"
"We've been married two days and you're freaking out now? I thought cold feet only happened on the wedding day." her question was rhetorical with a hint of embarrassment.
"Wait, did you say married?" Adelyn's voice audibly confused.
"Yes, don't you remember? We both must have had too much to drink last night." Sandra drove them back to the house in order to have their conversation within the safe confines of their home.
"But we weren't even dating, you were ....uh..." unable to finish her sentence she sat quietly for a moment pondering this new development.
"That hurts, I know we had a bit of a fight but you don't have to pretend I never existed." Sandra's face turned forlorn which tore at Adelyn's heart.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I guess I'm just a little confused this morning is all." apologizing Adelyn felt bad for hurting Sandy although still extremely befuddled she settles herself to finding out more about the situation.
"Thank you for apologizing" Sandra reaches over and curls her fingers around Adelyn's hand, the wedding band peaking through her fingers catches Adelyn's eyes. She lifts their hands studying the band on her finger wondering why she hadn't noticed it before when she was making a break for it. The car became silent as they drove into the driveway and made their way back into the house.
"You should probably get dressed for work, as cute as you are in my clothes they don't really fit you." Sandra commented with a smirk. Adelyn looked down only now realizing how silly she looks in the oversized clothing. "Right" she agreed. When she went searching for her own clothes she was noticeably lost.
"You have some clean slacks in our closet, I made sure to wash them last night after you went to bed."
"Oh uh thanks, that's what I was looking for" trying to hide her confusion. She was planning to escape without resistance or stirring up suspicion. Figuring out what is going on will have to wait until later. She rummages around the closet finding a few things that look about her size, she throws them on which fit perfectly before heading back into the living room. "I'll um head to work now" her voice cracks slightly. Sandra stops her from rushing out the door by placing a hand on her arm and leaning in for a unexpectedly passionate kiss before sending Adelyn off. Adelyn walks through the threshold in a daze.
Suddenly with a jerk Adelyn woke up in the most awkward position in her living room chair. The way she had slept put a crick in her neck and her leg was completely asleep. "Wow" was all she could say as she brought her fingers to her lips remembering the feel of their kiss "That felt so real.." she finally glanced outside noticing the sunlight at full tilt she realized she still needs to get dressed for work. In an absent minded haze she rushes out of her home. Adelyn tried to recollect what the dream was about. "That face, the woman looked just like Sandra...what could this mean?" as she walked she pondered "Why Sandy? is this some cosmic joke?" feeling incredibly weirded out by this whole situation she could not push the dream from her mind. "Obviously I've lost it, too much stress." she runs her fingers through her long red hair the sunlight shimmering through the trees. Squinting to hide the brightness of the sun from her sensitive blue eyes as she waits for her bus to arrive. The chill in the air becoming more present with each passing minute, she grabs the edges of her thin wind breaker and tucks her arms together. The fall weather pushing her dream from her mind giving her a slight reprieve.
