Dreamless

Adelyn wakes to her alarm clock and an empty bed in her own home. "I'd much rather sleep some more." She groans before rising out of bed. Hanging her legs off one side she rubs her temples, a massive migraine had set in sometime in the night. "Back to the daily grind I suppose." she sighed. She walks to the kitchen to pour herself a coffee , she gulps down a mouthful before spitting the rest out. "Ugh day old coffee." She proceeds to pour out the dark liquid she had forgot about the day before. "What mess did you get yourself into this time?" She asks herself rhetorically not really looking for an answer. She walks over to the fridge to pull out the coffee grounds from the freezer when her eye catches the bottle of vodka, looking especially tempting today. After short deliberation she decides "Fuck it." She pours a little bit of vodka into her morning coffee and goes about her day.

"Just to take the edge off." She convinces herself it'll help. Starting to feel her pain dull and her body relax she thinks "A little more couldn't hurt, its not like I'm going to go to work drunk." Underestimating the alcohols potency when combined with caffeine and an empty stomach. She downed what she felt like was just a tad bit more. Without realizing it, she was already stumbling around and acting on impulse. Adelyn put on some music, turning it up loud and relaxed into her comfy chair. The bass thumping into her chest. The rhythm soothes her mind engulfing her. She completely forgot all of her responsibilities allowing her to drift off into sleep. Soon she is lovingly greeted by a beautiful dark haired woman. One last thought 'This is becoming my favorite dream' before succumbing to her otherworldly fantasy.

------

Sandra says cheerfully "Good morning sleepy head." she glances towards the rustling in the bed while searching through the dresser drawers.

Adelyn turns over in their bed "Hey their beautiful." She hops out of bed, strolls up to Sandra and embraces her from behind while she is trying to get ready for work. Adelyn's advances hindering her progress. "Del honey "she giggles" as much as I love this I need to get my stuff for work, we have a big project due by the end of the week."

"Aww why though? Can't you stay home today with me?" She flashes puppy dog eyes at her. The intense blue of her eyes glistening. Sandra visibly melts "oh honey please don't do that to me, you look so sad." Sandra gives a concerned look to Adelyn before giving her a sweet kiss. "Well maybe I could take one day, you have been a little off lately. I should probably look after you."

Del parks up quickly dawning an immaculate smile.

"You trickster you! "laughing" how can you seem so tragic then smile like that in a blink of an eye." She caresses Adelyn's face with a loving touch. "Don't you also have work to get to?"

-------

Adelyn wakes with a start "Shit I'm late!" She stumbles into her work clothes and rushes out the door. The smell of alcohol still on her breath only slightly masked by coffee.

"You're late Adelyn Tracy!" Mrs. Lin shouted from across the room.

"I'm so sorry .. I uh overslept." Her hair bedraggled and dried drool still on her chin she attempts to convince Mrs. Lin that is until she came closer.

"Have you been day drinking!" Appalled Mrs. Lin didn't lower her voice. Everyone turned to get a peek at the drama unfolding.

"It was only a little I swear." Adelyns shoulders sunk forward.

"Go wash yourself up and get to work."

She made her way to the bathroom and took a sniff at herself "ugh, it is pretty bad... I'm never drinking again." She splashes water on her face and brushes her hair using her fingers trying to get it under control. Taking her seat she avoids eye contact with her coworkers and begins working. Half the day gone already yet piles of orders are stacked in front of her, one by one she dwindles the numbers until they are all finished.

Once home she receives a phone call "Hello, Miss Tracy, I'm calling in regards to your volunteering services, is it possible for you to come in?"

"Of course, is everything alright?"

"You'll be informed once you're here, good bye." the receptionist seemed curt.

"Goodbye.... this cant be good." She looks down at her phone and frowns "what else could possibly go wrong? She heads straight over to the hospital, a part of her hoping to see Sandra after such an awful day. The staff call her into their office "Hello Adelyn, how are you today?" they begin with pleasantries.

"I'm fine thanks." her default response.

"Do you know why we've brought you here today?" the man's tone seemed to be serious.

"Not a clue, did something happen to someone in my care?" Adelyn's voice carried concern.

"Not exactly, we've brought you here today to talk to you about a complaint I received from one of the patients caregivers. I was instructed to tell you not to enter the room 294.. Sandra Cuthwright.... her caregiver has informed us that if you have any contact with the patient there will be consequences. In simple terms we will have to relieve you of your services here. Now as long as you abide this rule you are allowed to continue here." The older gentleman says his obviously practiced speech and sends Adelyn on her way. She agrees with a nod. Walking past Sandra's room on the way out tears began streaking her face. She lightly touches the door before heading to the exit.

Laying in bed bottle in hand she decides to drown her sorrows "Welp I fucked everything up today." She takes a swig of vodka, it burns her throat and makes her mouth water. She ponders her life and how it ended up here, coming to the conclusion of being just plain unlucky. She rolls over setting the bottle down on the floor, her tv running a queue of YouTube videos she thought might cheer her up: Glow sticks in a blender, how to make clay from scratch, video game walkthroughs. But nothing catches her interest more than her thoughts at the moment. "How could you do that Mary, I trusted you....why did I trust you." She grabs the bottle taking another long swig before reaching for her phone and typing out a message.

Recipient: Mary

"Hey..."

"Why did you do that to me..."

"Not talking to me now? Now that you ruined my life?"

Received 1:00am

"Its ur own damn fault so lose my number. I dont want to hear from you again."

"So you come into my life, into my work place and hound me to go out with you but as soon as shit gets tough you screw me over and leave? You're seriously not taking any responsibly at all for what you did?"

"For what YOU did, why should I take responsibility for YOU? You slept with ME then tried to ghost me. With all this BULLSHIT I should have let you!"

"Excuse me? Obviously your the one who took advantage of ME, I was drunk! Where is all this coming from anyway? That was like so long ago."

"At first I thought you were just absent minded, but then I saw that your heart belongs to someone else, why did you keep me around? Something to play with when your bored?"

"Ouch, what the hell are you even talking about? Your accusing ME of cheating? I don't hear from you for weeks then all of a sudden I'm cheating on you and it's over? Fuck you!"

"Whatever"

"Blocked"

"Blocked"

"She fucking blocked me, Oh my god!!!" Adelyn screams. "How frustrating!" She storms out of her room red in the face, stomping through the house until she reaches her favorite chair. She glances at it, remembering how her brother gave it to her for her birthday. She'd loved it since the moment he brought it home for himself. It is a soft leather cushioned love seat, dark brown finish with light brown stitching. He coveted that chair, she had finally convinced him to give it to her when he left for college. He had always said he'd be taking it back once he got a home to put it in. Adelyn caresses the arm of the chair as her anger subsides into sadness once more. Her thoughts jumping from one thing to another. Replaying the events from the day. "Work sucks, Margret hates me...Mary completely betrayed me. I can't take care of Sandra anymore. What's the point on volunteering anymore if I can't do the one thing I was there for." another tear escapes onto her cheek.

She grabs a blanket and curls up in the now old and in need of repair loveseat pressing her face against it's still soft leather surface letting her tears flow succinctly onto it. "I miss you Ben... " the words almost inaudible. Quietly she drifts off to sleep, this time no dreams came to her.
