My Crazy Self

"Wait wait wait." I said, waving my hands in dismissal. "You are trying to tell me that one of my parents was a dragon?" I asked not actually believing the words I was hearing.

"Oh no honey. It would have been your great many times over grandfather whom was the dragon." Mrs.Horn said. "Since you would only be a small fraction dragon, you won't get any cool powers, just some traits. For instance being able to talk to your hatchlings, or having pupils that can retract. I already called the DDP. They will do some blood tests, and see if my theory is correct. If not, you are just a freak of nature." she said with a shrug.

"You are saying this too calmly." I gritted the words through my teeth. "Either way I am a freak of nature." I said. My voice full of hate, though no one did anything to have angered me.

Valorous ran inside, and wrapped around my legs in a protective stance.

"Who is making my mama angry?" he growled. He sniffed my leg and growled again "You are scared too. Who frightened you? I will take care of them. Make them a prisoner just like you said." He said in a growl, though looking at me with loving eyes. I petted his still wet head.

"It is okay. I only feel like that because I got some...unforseen news. I will be fine. I don't need protection right now. Thank you for trying to save me." I said through my mind rather than my mouth. He nodded and left back out the door.

"Okay I need to remain calm for my dragons sake. They feel my emotions and can read my thoughts." I said to the boys and Mrs.Horn.

"Dont worry, if I am correct, you can learn to block that out when you want to." Mrs.Horn said.

*Three Days Later*

The men from the DDP handed me a paper with a shaking hand, on it was the results of the blood test. I looked at there faces and I turned white. By their faces I could tell...I could tell they thought I was a nut case. I could almost hear them talking outside, about the nut inside who thought she was a dragon. Why on Earth did Mrs.Horn tell me that it was a possibility. Now I wasn't just the run of the mill crazy dragon lady (if there were such a thing), I was now THE crazy dragon lady, who actually thought she was a dragon because she can talk to dragons. My face went from white as a sheet, to a deep red as I covered my eyes. I was completely and utterly embarrassed. "Why on Earth would you tell me I was a dragon?!" I yelled at Mrs.Horn.

"It was a possible scenario with all of your weird quirks with dragons." she said in a voice both innocent and pompous. As if she was actually right.

"Don't anger me lady, I can be dangerous if I want to." I said, almost growling the words.

"Ooh our girl has a temper I like that." Bill said. He sat on the chair in the living room. He was watching our conversation like it was a TV show.

"Remember what I just said Bill." I said. Though I still was glaring at Mrs.Horn. "I have eight dragons backing me up." I said "and I can call for any one of them silently through my mind. You will never embarrass me again. I said.

She shook a bit "You were scary before this, even when your dragons were no bigger than softballs. It seems you have gotten scarier though." she said. "You have a fierce terrifying presence, that can melt away when you want it to. You have eyes that can change to that of a snake. You can speak to multiple dragons from miles away, telepathically. And you were only stunned for a few moments before you adjusted to every punch this new world threw at you. You don't think that is enough reason to believe that you were genetically weird?" she said.

I looked at my feet. She was right. Something was more than just odd about me. I might not have dragon blood, but I had something weird.

Bill chimed in a little late,

"That crazy old lady has a point." Mrs.Horn's jaw dropped at the insult, but she remained silent. "You are weird, like weird even for a dragon lady." he finished. He was right. Even if Mrs.Horn had just said the same thing, but I was only going to agree with Bill.

"I am going for a walk to clear my head." I said while walking towards the door. I took a deep breath as I opened the door to leave. As soon as I opened the door I found two very nosy dragons listening against the door. I plopped down on my knees and just accepted the nuzzles of encouragement that I got from my dragons. Vainglorious laid down and I petted the soft feathers on his back, this was very calming. "You know you have the softest feathers I have ever felt." I said to him out loud.

"I know." he said. I rolled my eyes, and he wrapped his tail around me covering my lap with the puff of feathers at the end of his tail. Reticent blew hot steam into the air around us warming our little circle of bodies. His long body wrapped around Vainglorious and I as he settled down. We all ended up falling asleep on the ground

I woke up in the evening, and looked at my surroundings. I had my head rested on Vainglorious, and one of Reticent's bright orange wings covered my body like a blanket. I sat up and yawned, waking up both of the dragons. I scratched under their chins, then stroked both of their heads.

"Thank you for calming me down. You guys are so sweet." I said outloud. I gave them both a kiss on the head before we walked away together. "Do you boys want to show me what you have learned so far?" I asked them through my mind Vainglorious ran to the chicken coup, leaving Reticent and I behind. I heard a small roar when he got to the coup.

"Watch me first Mama. I am amazing." I heard Vainglorious in my head. Reticent followed me to the coup. Vainglorious shrunk down to the ground (which was still rather easy as they were only the size of large dogs currently). Most of his feathers turned white to match the hens, but the fluff on his tail was still a reddish color matching the rooster. He crept slowly, until he was in the middle of a group of several chickens. Then without a sound one was dead in his jaws. He had crushed its head in its mouth so quickly, the chicken had no way of scaring the other birds. Vainglorious stood up, scaring the chickens, to trot proudly to me. "Did you see me?" he asked excitedly.

"You were amazing." I said to him, motherly pride radiated off of me. "One thing though, even if you have already caught your prey, try and leave quietly too, that way it will be easier to sneak up on them multiple times without them suspecting you." I added. He nodded slowly at me, because he hadn't done it perfectly for me. I saw his eyes, and knew he needed a compliment. "What you did with your tail to make it look like the rooster was genius!" I said. His eyes glowed.

"That is the only part of me that I can make different colors of right now, so I figured out how to make it useful." he said both meekly and proudly.

"Pretty and smart." I said "You are one amazing Fowl Feller." I finished.

Reticent rubbed his head against my side.

"Umm is it my turn now? I want you to see me catch a fish. Is that okay Mama?" He asked meekly.

"I would love nothing more than to see you in action." I said, whilst stroking one of his four wings. Vainglorious stayed at the chicken coup, and I walked with Vainglorious to the creek.

Valorous and Blithesome were both present catching small amounts of fish themselves, though failing most of the time. "Hello." I said upon seeing them. "But neither of them looked at me. Both of them were very focused on the fish they were failing to catch. Reticent jumped into the water. "Watch me Mama." he said as he began fishing. I expected him to look at the water's surface and concentrate on the fish like the others, but instantly he had a fish. I dropped my jaw. Within minutes he had caught two more.

"Reticent you are so good at this." I said to him happily. Blithesome, Valorous, and Reticent all ate one of the fish that Reticent had caught. "Are you helping your siblings to learn?" I asked. It was a genuine question, not a expectation. He looked down at his talons, and curled his wings in a little bit.

"I don't know if they want my help. What if I ask them, and they are offended." he said sounding as timid as ever.

"Reticent, you will be the largest and most powerful dragon here someday, maybe the exception being Somnolent, he could be the most deadly." I said "but you will have brute strength. These neon scales of yours mean you will be very strong, and your species means you will be very large, and no matter what will always have family to back you up. You have nothing to fear. At the very least I am sure Blithesome will want you." I said to him I stroked his head and sent him off to the others. They all started practicing again, so I decided to see if I could find Somnolent's new napping spot. I searched and searched, but with him being brown and having such a vast property, I knew finding him alone would be fruitless. I tried talk to him through my mind "Somnolent are you awake? Where are you?" I asked waiting for a response. "East." he said in my head. He was very vague, but then I realized, if he was in the forrest "East was the only directions he could give me. I kept walking East. I could tell the direction by the movement of the sun. "Now South" I heard in my head. I turned to start walking southwards. Finally what I thought was a large brown rock among a pine grove moved and I realized it was actually Somnolent. "You picked a smart place." I said. He nodded and purred. "These red needles are soft." he said kneading the pine needles underneath him.

I smiled at him.

"You see these trees?", I asked. I saw him look at the needle covered trees. "These trees are called evergreens, because they stay alive and green even in the cold...even though we don't truly have winter here. Those needles are waterproof too; so if you stay under a thick evergreen tree while it rains, you will stay dry. You could probably find a cave somewhere when it rains too." I told him. He nodded again. This dragon was definitely the least chatty among the siblings. Our little chat was ruined by a smell.

I smell someone new I thought. Since when could I smell people?

"Someone new." Somnolent said.

I started running to the edge of the forrest where I could see Valorous standing guard in front of a young girl. He growled and spun around her each time she tried to move.

"Coruscant, Blithesome, I need you to come to me." I said I ran to the girl with eyes staring daggers. How was she on this land? She can't know about dragons; but Valorous already showed himself.

"Why are you here?" I asked the girl angrily. She was probably fifteen maybe less. Her face was covered in freckles and she had red hair that was braided down her back. I didn't care if she was young, she needed to fear me.

Just then Coruscant landed next to me from the sky that she had flown in. The girl gave a scared "eep!" Then Blithesome came running through the trees with a loud growl. She girl was pale to begin with, but surrounded by three angry dragons, and a scary woman who already seemed to hate her; that drained any color she had from her face.

"Freeze her to the ground." I said through the mental link between Blithesome and Coruscant. Blithesome blew a thick mist, while, Coruscant blew a layer of frost freezing the wet legs of the girl. She soon was frozen to the ground. Ice held her from her knees down. "Who are you, and why are you here?!" I barked at the girl. She was still pale, and I considered that a win for me. She shivered, and not because of the cold, but because of fear.

"Uh...Uhmm...I...a...a" The girl stuttered.

"Spit it Out!" I yelled. I knew I wasn't typically this mean, but if she exposed my dragons, they could be hunted.

"I am Mabel!", she busted out quickly and loudly with her eyes closed.

"Well Mabel...What are you doing here?" I asked slowly and calmly, almost sounding like a villain.

"I am here to study. The DDP sent me, well my dad, Paul, sent me." she said quickly again still with her eyes closed and her face scrunched.

At the mention of the DDP and Paul, I stopped my villainous aura, but still acted dominant. "Well you should have led with that." I said more friendly. "Now watch my eyes right now." I commanded. she looked me dead in the eyes, as my pupils narrowed. "Blithesome," I said through my mind, can you blow steam to melt the ice? I don't think she is a threat." Blithesome did as asked.

I looked back at Mabel with my pupils back to normal. "Now you see Mabel; if you ever try to do anything to harm me or my dragons, I have the mental ability to summon and command my dragons. Whom are still very young and not fully grown. As they grow they can become more dangerous." I said in a warning. "Now come with me, we can talk at the house." I said in a monotone voice. She followed a good five steps behind me, while Valorous marched next to me. When we finally got back to the house Mrs.Horn was raiding the fridge.

"Who is this?" Mrs.Horn asked in a much happier tone than the one I had used.

"I am Mabel." The girl said.

"Oh right the mouse." Mrs.Horn said.

"You knew about her?" I asked Mrs.Horn. without thinking I had switched back to my regular tone. I lost my scary vibe.

"Why yes," she said, "After I asked for blood tests, Paul wanted to know why; so I explained what was going on. When you didn't have any dragon DNA in your blood, the DDP got curious. So they sent a mouse to silently watch you." she said. Then gestured at Mabel. Valorous, whom had followed me into the house started to growl at Mabel again. "Don't mind her, I don't think she is a threat. She is just a mouse." I said out loud. Valorous looked curious at her, obviously wondering why she didn't look like a rodent.

"I promise I am not a threat. When mom tried to get me to teach the Copper Shredders to fish, I failed because I couldn't bare to kill the fish." she said frantically

"Your mother raises dragons?" I asked genuinely.

"Yes, I will too...someday...maybe." she said looking depressed.

"Okay Mouse I didn't like your introduction, and I don't like the fact that you will be keeping tabs on me; but with the help from Mrs.Horn and I, maybe you will learn a thing or two about dragons." I gave her a smile, which seemed to lift her mood dramatically.

"Mom would be so happy. I could learn to be brave and less sympathetic for dragon food." She smiled. "Learnt how crazy awesome you are too. You can talk to all of your dragons, you are raising the biggest clutch ever, you are raising them amazingly despite knowing nothing about them, you take care of the workers. Oh did your dragon tell you I was here? That had to be why you found me so fast, so cool." she said. Suddenly she was fan-girling over me.

I responded to her in a dead serious voice.

"No I smelt you." I said. She proceeded to smell her armpits to see if she stunk.

"Not your BO." I said. I was about a mile away from you. You smelt new." I said. I had forgotten how crazy that was until I heard Mrs.Horn.

"Well that's a new one." she said. Then I heard another squeal come from Mabel.

"You can speak telepathically to eight different dragons, from long distances away, your pupils restrict, and you have super smelling. Maybe you are a new species of dragon. All species have to start somewhere maybe that's you." Mabel said, her voice and face matched in excitement.

"Calm down Mouse, I don't think that is how evolution works. I think I am just picking up traits that I need to protect the dragons. I didn't have any of this until the hatchlings were ready to leave the nest." I said.

"No other dragon lady has ever had this happen though." she said.

"Well I am different, all of my dragons are different there are more then double the amount, and I am raising them like children, not animals." I said.

Mabel crossed her arms.

"Do you think you are the only dragon lady who has raised dragons as children? The whole reason we know, that naming them is complicated, is because some other dragon lady did it in the past. Which meant she had to take care of them their whole lives too, which meant she needed to protect her dragons too. But she never got dragon traits." Mable said with more courage. Why was I so odd?
