"What do you think of the dragons so far?" I asked the little girl who was holding my hand.
"The are nice." she said with a smile. Valorous, whom was still at Daisy's side, gave a happy chirp.
"Okay Daisy this next dragon is called a Flower Frill, her name is Callalilly." I said. For whatever reason Daisy got a burst of confidence and ran into the field where Callalilly was posed. Callalilly snapped her head at the unknown girl; her garden like frills still out.
"Ahh" Daisy took in a breath of amazement, "You are the most butiful thing I ever saw." Daisy said.
At first I could feel the annoyance radiating off of Callalilly, as her hunt for bees was interrupted. but as soon as she heard the compliment she was happy again. Her and Vainglorious could forgive anything if complimented.
"Callalilly this is Daisy, she is new to our hoard. She is a False Human like me." I told the Flower Frill. Though I was ignored.
"Callalilly you don't have any daisies on your frill. I am named after daisies." Daisy said, in a disappointed voice.
"Daisies are great. I do not choose the flowers that show on my frills little one. You are here, now I have a daisy." Callalilly said, immediately making Daisy smile. I could tell that these two would have a special relationship. All of my dragons seemed to genuinely like Daisy, except maybe Rose, but I am sure Daisy would win her over. Daisy began to walk through the patch of wildflowers picking daisies for Callalilly.
"I think she just likes things with flower names." Cortelco said.
"Oh don't spoil this Telee. You are just jealous because she didn't show much interest in you." I said. then stopped when I heard, "Cally I got you some Daisies now you have a bunch." Daisy said.
"Well, that is the first nickname she has chosen. I imagine she will call you Telee like I do." I said to Cortelco. He mad a frustrated grunt noise, obviously mad that he wasn't going to get a custom nickname.
"Okay Daisy we have more dragons, and people to meet." I told Daisy.
"See you later Caly I have to go now." Daisy said.
"I will see you then my Daisy." Callalilly responded.
She hopped back on Valorous back. He had been rather quiet this whole time.
"Valorous, are you okay? You have been very quiet today?" I asked him.
"I need to observe Daisy without any intervention. That way I know her physical and mental state. I need to know what is standard, and how she responds to different situations. That way I can protect her, even if I know it will go against her wishes." he responded.
"You are very wise, and very smart little one. You may continue your quiet observations." I said, giving a quick nod to the small six legged dragon.
I began to sniff the air hoping to pick up Vainglorious' scent. I managed to, but it was mixed in with the smell of turkeys. I nodded to myself knowing that I would have to skip over him for now. So we walked to the icy barn to see Coruscant. I pushed open the big barn door revealing the shiny, sparkling, giant freezing Coruscant; whom was just cooling off. I didn't have time for intros, because Daisy had already began to climb up Coruscants body. I heard "Why hello little one." coming from Coruscant.
"Hi I am Daisy, Ivy said your name Corkscrew-ant." Daisy said, proud that she had remembered the name, but oblivious that she had butchered it. If I was drinking something it would have come out of my nose, I was laughing so hard. Daisy and Coruscant played in the ice and snow, making a lumpy snow dragon, and I decided to call Mabel.
RING RING RING "Hello"
"Hey, Mouse. I have a fun idea for you." I said
"Ivy do I get to go clothes shopping for a child?" Mabel said with her voice increasing in pitch.
"Well I suppose that too, and since her blond curls mostly cover her horns, you can even take her with you. That wasn't my idea though. Daisy is five. She can't read yet, and even if she could my notes on dragons would be too complex for her to understand..."
"OMG Do you need me to make dragon picture books?" she asked with her voice still an octave too high.
"Yeah, but make them educational too. just fit in what the dragons are called and what they do. I think she will transition better that way." I explained. So I will go shopping for little kid clothes, art supplies, and I am no longer the youngest?" she sarcastically summarized.
"Jasper is younger than you." I added.
"Jasper is a fifty year old man stuck in a tiny teenage body." she retorted. I couldn't disagree with her, that did sound like him.
"Oh get this she calls Coruscant... wait for it Corkscrew-ant." I started laughing again. Mabel was busting her gut on the other end of the phone.
"Oh don't forget before you bring her anywhere you need a carseat. A False Human might not actually need one, but I imagine explaining that to a cop would make you sound even crazier. Now that you have your driver's license you don't need Bill to take you." I told her.
"I have to go Mouse it is getting late, and Daisy still needs to meet a few more dragons. Bye.". Before Abel could say her good-byes I hung up.
I sniffed the air outside the barn, and I could smell Vainglorious, this time separate from the smell of turkeys. "Okay Daisy, time to meet the next dragon. She hesitantly left her snowdragon and Coruscant.
"Bye bye Corkscrew." Daisy said with a wave. I stifled a laugh at Coruscant's new nickname.
This time I threw the little girl on my shoulders and ran to the edge of the woods at a speed that Valorous could match. Daisy gripped my horns and was instantly squeeling with laughter. I could see a very confused Vainglorious at the edge of the forest, not because of the fact that I was running at him, but it was the fact that a was twirling and running zig zags on my way to him, with a new dragon holding my horns. I wanted to drag out this ride making her giggle longer, but I had to stop when I got close to Vainglorious.
"Daisy this is Vainglorious." I said as I took her of my shoulders. He bowed sticking his tail in the air showing off his feathers, and making them pulsate to different colors.
"Wow he is so beautiful. I wish I had feathers like you Van Gough." Daisy. Vainglorious tilted his head ever so slightly and whispered to me, "Why did she call me a wrong name?" he asked.
"Most young humans and False dragons have trouble saying some letters and words when they are young. Be happy the human Van Gough was a famous artist. She calls Coruscant Corkscrew-ant." I told him. He chuffed a laugh and returned to a normal comfortable position.
"What is so funny?" Daisy asked, a bit offended that she wasn't informed about anything funny.
"I just was telling Vainglorious about you meeting the other dragons, that is all." I told her with a white lie. she continued to pet and stroke the colorful feathers on the dragons wings. Vainglorious moved his tail, and ticketed the girls neck with his tail feathers, causing her to laugh.
"Okay little flower it is time to meet your last dragon, this one will be scary for you, but I promise most of the time he just sleeps. If I am sad I find him to snuggle. The only time he hates anyone is if he is protecting himself or our hoard." Daisy froze in place.
"Is this the dragon who made me stuck still?" she said in a quiet scared voice.
"Yes Daisy, but I promise he won't hurt you again. He was just scared because he didn't know who you were. usually if there is a stranger here, they are trying to hunt me or the dragons. Sometimes humans think it is a camping spot and they have to have to have there memories of here erased, that way they don't tell about all the dragons here. See this last dragon's name is Somnolent, and he has different kinds of poison, but he only used the paralyzing one on you because he didn't want to hurt you, because he didn't know if you were dangerous." I tried to explain.
"How am I dangerous? I am just a kid." Daisy asked.
"Well Daisy my dragons have never seen a child before, he might of thought you were just a smaller kind of dragon. Also even if he thought you were a kid, it still meant that you could run and tell other people about the dragons here." I explained further. Daisy looked like she was processing the new information well enough, but it was obvious that she was scared. I also knew Somnolent wouldn't be very ocomadating, he has always been like that, even right after he hatched. I squeezed her hand. I promise as long as I am around you are safe, and we are going to live for a long long time." I told her giving her a small amount of comfort. I squeezed her hand and we walked to Somnolent. When we finally reached him he was out cold, and showed no signs of waking up. I rolled my eyes and walked towards him, leaving Daisy standing alone.
"Wake up you over grown lizard. Mama wants you to meet someone." I said pushing his side, and smacking his stomach. Well nothing gentle was working, so I resorted to my lowest level. I bent over and jabbed him with my strong horns, not enough to hurt him, it probably felt more like a hard pinch. That woke him up he turned to me and growled.
"Oh no mister you do not growl at Mama. I tried to wake you up the normal way, but you wouldn't get up." I said scolding the dragon that was much larger than me. I heard Daisy giggling where I left her.
"What is so funny?" I asked her.
"Well he could easily bite your head off right now, but you act like the boss." Daisy said still smiling.
"That's because I am the boss." I said, "I have taken care of this big grump since he was an egg, he is also the oldest dragon here, though only by a few seconds." I explained. "Come over here and properly meet him, so he can go back to napping."
She sheepishly walked over "Hello I am Daisy. I live here now." she said quietly.
"I am Somnolent. Don't bug me again, if Mama says you are safe I won't harm you." he grumbled then curled back up to sleep."
Daisy looked shocked, she definitely wasn't expecting his behavior, especially after how the other dragons had acted around her. I grabbed her hand and we walked away.
"He loves me and is comforting when I am sad, but usually he just wants to sleep. That is why he is such a grump." I explained. "Now that you have met all of the dragons you should meet the humans. We also need to figure out how your schooling will work. you are about five right?" I asked the little girl.
"I'm five and a half." She said proudly.
"Okay so we should be working on the alphabet, spelling, counting, and a few other things with you. I bet Mabel would be the most willing to teach you academics. I am more of a PE teacher." I told Daisy using my fingers to list off all of the things she needed to learn. "Mabel is going to help you learn about some dragon stuff too." I added.
once we got out of the forest and into a clear area with no branches that could hit Daisy I put her on my shoulders and ran to the houses. I walked into Bill's house without knocking. I put Daisy down when we got inside. As usual Bill and Mrs.Horn were in the kitchen chatting over snacks and coffee.
"Hey I would like to introduce our newest dragon and resident, Daisy." I said, and jestured to the nervous girl.
Mrs.Horn was first to run and crouch down in front of her.
"You you are just the sweetest thing. Look at all of those curls." she ran her fingers through Daisy's hair, and her knuckles brushed against her small horns. "Looks like you really are a dragon." Mrs.Horn said as she moved more of Daisy's hair to get a better view of her small horns. "At least you will be able to wear a t-shirt, and not a button up like Ivy. Not that she wears a shirt often anyways." Mrs.Horn said glancing up at me. I was simply wearing cargo shorts and a sports bra.
"Hey don't blame me, since these scales came in I stopped sweating, it gets hot. My scales are too pretty to hide anyways." I smiled when I spoke of my scales.
"Jasper and Will are out getting a carseat." Bill told me, as he crouched down to Daisy's level.
"Hello little lady. My name is Bill. This is my house, I live here with my boys, but they are getting you a carseat right now." he said with a smile, reaching out to shake her tiny hand.
Daisy looked around a bit, then looked up to me.
"Where is Mabel, I thought you said she was gonna teach me?" she asked. At that I got an evil smirk on my face.
"Telee can you go and get Mouse?" I asked Cortelco, I still had an evil smirk plastered on my face. He knew exactly what I wanted to happen, so he flew off towards Mabel's cabin. About five minutes later we could hear high pitched screams coming from outside. We all looked out the window to see Cortelco holding Mabel by her hood in his claws. He dropped her about three feet from the ground, where she swiftly landed on her butt. Cortelco landed a few feet away from Mabel.
"Give me some f***ing warning next time you stupid overgrown lizard!" Mabel yelled at Cortelco.
"Language Mouse there is a child present." I said in a mocking voice.
Mabel marched up to me, I could now see several dead bugs smashed against her face. I couldn't stop laughing nor could Cortelco, whom was on his back making a chuffing noise in laughter. Luckily Daisy knew what Mabel was captured for.
"Ivy said you could be my teacher."
