'I'm not waking the dragon; you do it!'
At least some things never change.
I felt clammy and warm like I was bathing in some tropical paradise, but I realised why when I opened my eyes. There was a thick woollen blanket lying underneath me, with Stormfall and Avrae wedged at either side, their boiling hot skin pressed right up against mine. Then in front sat little Rose, watching over me, with her round, red flushed face mere inches away.
'Jake's awake!' She cried, running to fetch Cali.
'The last thing I remember-' My face sagged as the painful memory came flooding back. 'Dad.'
Cali ushered Rose out the way. 'We don't want to wake the big dragon, do we?'
She shook her head, not saying another word.
'I'm so sorry, Jake.'
Cali was curling up next to me, so I didn't have to shout. 'I wish this were a dream.'
She didn't know what to say to that.
