Chapter 15

5th December 2050

There was commotion in the Chamber of the House of Representatives and speaker of the House was trying to control the members.

"Please calm down. All your questions will be answered by representatives of United States General Survey Dr. George F. Wellston and Dr. Madison G. Orwell. Please calm down and be seated." Speaker of the House screamed.

President was sitting in his chair after addressing the joint session of the Congress. This was not a small matter and he had expected this much. He sat calm and with poise, while the members brawled in the hall.

"One milestone achieved. Now to the second part." President thought.

6th December 2050

Media from across the globe was gathered in front of the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters in New York to attend 15th Emergency Special session of the General Assembly. The legislative, constitutional, or Administrative rulers of the members of the United Nations were gathering there. All the members had gathered in the hall and were seated in their designated seats. The session was about to start.

The General Assembly meeting generally requires an agenda to be shared with all the members of the session. However, US Government made special requests to the Security Council of United Nations to arrange this session without an agenda. This was first of its kind session and maybe the last one.

The session started with regular customs and General Assembly President welcomed all the members present there. Out of 103 members, 95 Heads of states attended the meeting. Others could not attend due to various reasons. The session was being broadcasted throughout the world live.

After customary activities, President of the United States of America was invited to speak. President Mathew stood up and addressed the world.

"Mr. President of General Assembly, Dear respected fellow Presidents, Distinguished Governments, Excellencies, and friends. I welcome you all at the 15th Emergency Special session of the General Assembly. It would be ungrateful and disgraceful of us Americans if I did not thank you for attending this session on such short notice and with such exceptions granted to us. I sincerely and wholeheartedly thank all the attendees." President paused and looked at General Assembly President.

"When I started my careers as a politician, I had never thought that I would ever be able to become the president of United States of America. I am certain I had never imagined in my wildest dreams that a day would come when I would have to call for a General Assembly session like this." Mathew continued

"I have always been proud to be able to represent the world's greatest nation. It has been the greatest honor of my life to lead a nation through greatest scientific discoveries of our times, greatest economic achievements and era of finest arts and crafts. This has been times when we could find balance between tech-growth and nature safety." President was being emotional. His heart raced a little.

"This past year of my life in general and especially as president of United States of America has been most difficult, painful, sad and miserable. Being the president of United States of America, I had to bear the knowledge of events of past, present and especially future that I would want to forget or not know from the beginning. I have called this session to share one such piece of information with you." President sighed.

"In 2048, Dr. Madison G. Orwell, an American Seismologist, wrote a research paper entitled "The Earth is Dying" published by a prestigious journal "Earthly Research". At that time most of the scientific communities and Governments eluded this paper. However, we decided to make sure he was wrong. We did not want to leave a shred of doubt in the matter."

"United States General Survey started the extensive research and after two years of research, the scientists found out that the inner core of the earth was getting hotter. Because it is getting hotter, the outer core is slowly becoming part of inner core. The inner core is expanding as well as getting hotter. In short, they concluded that Dr. Madison was right all along, and the earth is going to explode by 2110." President Mathew paused. A wave of unrest spread through all the participants. They started whispering.

"I am sorry to share such news with you. I really am. However, I would like to invite all the members to the next meeting to discuss the strategies for our future. I would like to invite all of you as It is the time when the humanity needs to stand together; It is the time when we should rise above our differences." The whispering had now turned into loud noise. President Mathew felt that no one was listening to him anymore.

"It is the time when we should come together as a force; It is the time when we should forget about race, religion, boundaries, culture, language and even our histories; It is time when we should focus on our future; It is time when we can decide the fate of our children and their children and their children and so on; and It is time when we decide whether we live or die."

"As the president of United States of America, representative of greatest nation on earth, I would like to announce to the world, on behalf of my fellow Americans." President Mathew paused. He was being emotional. One could see resolve on his face.

"WE DECIDE TO LIVE."

Chaos ensued in and out of the hall.
